I don't know of any studies off the top of my head, but I have a ton of antecdotal experience dealing with competency models in leadership development. Basically, some work and some don't because of several factors: 1. defining the right competencies competencies should align with real performance metrics. For example, if "setting clear expectations" is a competency, then employees should be surveyed, and those who say their manager sets clear expectations should belong to higher-performing workgroups.
