DOL Says Employees May Take FMLA Leave When Domestic Partner Gives ...
Initial overnight reports made it appear that the Obama administration was expanding the FMLA to allow employees to take leave to care for a same-sex partner. However, it appears that isn’t the case. Several new outlets are now reporting that the expansion will apply only to the limited situation when an employee requests leave in relation to the birth or adoption of a same-sex partner’s child. What the ruling does. The practical significance of the guidance appears to be somewhat limited. The FMLA has long been interpreted as granting leave to employees who are “ in loco parentis ” to a domestic partner’s child — which ... market research, surveys and trends

LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. — Once a tradition of the holiday season, the annual holiday bonus continues to lose credibility as an effective way to reward employees.  Indeed, according to a new survey from Hewitt Associates, a global human resources services company, 63 percent of companies will not award holiday bonuses this year.  However, the news isn’t all bad.  Ninety percent1 of companies are relying on variable pay plans (performance-based bonuses that must be re-earned annually) to show their appreciation to hard-working employees this year. “Companies continue to realize the value of performance-based awards as a ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Grading Elena Kagan: She Sailed Through This Job Interview
You are Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan and this is your job interview. You sit alone at a small table in the middle of a large and crowded room. A few steps up, facing you and around the sides as well, are 19 feisty human resources directors. Increasingly dysfunctional among themselves, and positively dreary in front of an outsider from another branch of government, they appear less interested in your answers than in the camera-ready phrasings of their own questions. Behind you, and above in the booths, hundreds of journalists are taking down your every word. C-SPAN and the cable news channels are rolling. Your family and ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

I'm so sick of the news story about the loss of productivity due ...
Every local TV news crew sends a reporter to do a "story" from a sports bar about how the NCAA basketball tournament causes all this lost productivity. It a lame, lazy, old story, and I'm just sick of hearing it. The loss in productivity due to days off, following the games at your desk, and time wasted filling out pools is a small part of the story. It's fun. It gives employees a reason to interact and gets them excited to come to work. On a large scale, it's a boon to the economy. People travel, they go out, they upgrade their home entertainment centers...People spend money. Beer trucks, gas for the trucks, ...
