In honor of Sean Taylor, the Washington Redskins star who was fatally shot last week, the NFL had fans stand for a collective moment of silence. The grief-filled response stands in sharp contrast to the collective silence around the USA over the growing numbers of murders by and against blacks, tragedies that occur in relative obscurity. Murder statistics can be misleading. Despite a modest 1.8% increase in homicides nationally in 2006 from 2005, the situation in many cities is more dire. Police chiefs report escalating street violence, particularly involving youngsters and gangs with guns. Some startling trends ...

What Bolstering Gun Rights Will Mean - Room for Debate Blog ...
involved Chicago’s longtime ban on handguns. Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the 5-to-4 majority, said the decision does not imperil every law regulating firearms, like those prohibiting gun possession by felons or bans on firearms in schools. But the court left unanswered just what other types of gun control laws — beyond an outright ban on handguns — might also violate the Second Amendment. What are the implications of this decision? And how might states and local governments fashion strong policies aimed at stopping gun violence? DNA Forensics and Kids Don't Mix « Blisstree
Learning to analyze DNA and other pieces of evidence from a crime scene may encourage children to commit their own crimes. Criminal justice professor James Alan Fox of Northeastern University believes that bringing “violence” into the school nudges some kids’ simple curiosity into criminal intent. Last Friday, sophomore John Odgren of Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Massachusettes stabbed classmate James Alenson to death. Odgren apparently exhibited an interest in forensics and was part of a crime scene investigation summer program at Mount Community College two years ago. Some believe he had an ... market research, surveys and trends

Prognosis for the Future
published in May 1995, concluded that "[i]f violent juvenile crime increased in the future as it has for the past 10 years . . . by the year 2010 the number of juvenile arrests for violent crime will more than double and the number of juvenile arrests for murder will increase nearly 150 percent." However, more recent data provided by the FBI show that the level of juvenile crime and violence appears to be leveling off, if not falling. The juvenile murder arrest rate, which increased 169 percent between 1983 and the end of 1993, has decreased 23 percent since 1993 and dropped 14 percent in 1995 alone. 26 The juvenile ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

He can be contacted at (CNN) -- In television dramas like CBS' "Criminal Minds," serial killers are apprehended swiftly and surely. In real murder cases -- as in the investigation and recent capture of a suspect in the so-called "Grim Sleeper" killings on the south side of Los Angeles, California -- it can take years, even decades, to bring a suspect to justice. FILE - This July 2009 file self-portrait provided by the Island County Sheriff's Office shows Colton Harris-Moore, the so-called "Barefoot Bandit". Why has Philadelphia PA become the Murder Capital of the United ...
It is so horrible to know that there are close to 300 murders in the city and we are barely half way through the year. 300 murders means there are others who didn't die but many attempts were made in addition. Why? I think there is a lot of pressure on the minds of the people and they are becoming mentally unravelled... Guns and violence have really become a part the culture of the city. I can't give a specific reason but I've noticed carrying a gun in Philly (even just to go hang out on South Street) has become a necessity for 'street cred' I suspect a lot of it has to do with the ...
