The North Sea oil and gas industry currently faces recruitment and retention difficulties due to a shortage of skilled workers. The vital contribution of this sector to the U.K. economy means it is crucial for companies to focus on retaining existing employees. One means of doing this is to improve the job satisfaction of workers. In this paper, we investigate the determinants of job satisfaction and intentions to quit within the U.K. North Sea oil and gas industry. We analyse the effect of personal and workplace characteristics on the job satisfaction and quit intentions of offshore employees. The data used were collected ...

Issue of the Decade | Room Eight
“Things that used to be sacred cows, that used to be the third rail, no longer are. They’ve been replaced by the unaffordability, absolute unaffordability.” He is referring to public employee pensions and retirement benefits, and I agree, unfortunately, that it will be the issue of the decade, and the morality of it will vary from place to place. In some places, such as New Jersey, public employees have contributed a great deal to their own pensions, and it is the employer (former taxpayers) who didn't put in the required amount, to get more spending with less in taxes. In California and some other states, the public ... market research, surveys and trends

“ASK NOT what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country,” John F. Kennedy told Americans in his inaugural address in January 1961. This may sound an outlandish plea today, but how much better off many countries would be in these times of recession if they could rely on their citizens to show public spirit and work for the national rather than the personal interest. We mention this because in Cyprus, we have reached the sad stage where nobody asks what they can do for their country. We do not even ask what our country can do for us any more – we just demand and expect immediate satisfaction. We have come ... market research, surveys and trends

A truce has finally been brokered between Honda bosses and the striking workers who effectively shuttered the Japanese car giant's entire operations in China for almost two weeks. Higher Education's Big Lie
The argument is still very strong that students of lower socio-economic backgrounds should attend college. It opens up financial and career paths that are just not available. Professional societies are really the last "unions" we have, if by that we mean groups of organized labor that can charge a higher rate than otherwise would be available to individuals without coordination. Degrees do mean less when everyone gets them, but that doesn't make it less valuable to have (the same is true of a high school diploma). What is your opinion of labor unions in the United States? - Yahoo ...
I am a member of a labor union, and also a conservative. While some would find this very contradictory, I fully support my union (while realizing it's corruption, like any other human institution). I also fully support civil liberties, which is mostly why I fit in the "conservative" category. I ask because I have found amazing anti-union sentiment in a lot of folks who I would have thought would be fully supportive of labor unions. This includes people with low paying, blue collar jobs. The sentiment seems to be that I should be making less money, not that they should be making more. I get raises with every ...
