Great Grand-Daddy of Reconciliation | Talking Points Memo
As a Senate Committee staffer in the early 1980's, I participated in the first major use of reconciliation, and I would like to recount my experience. I understand that CRS has documented significant instances of reconciliation, but I would like to provide some personal flavor. First, reconciliation was a little noticed provision of the Congressional Budget Control and Impoundment Act of 1974, a significant attempt by Congress to establish a disciplined process for getting a handle on the burgeoning federal budget in the waning years of the guns and butter policy of the Johnson Administration, which carried out both the ... market research, surveys and trends
Opposing Views: Sad Legacy of Ted Kennedy: Working with KGB to ...
The late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) believed in “rights” for homosexuals, federally funded abortion premised on the validity of Roe v. Wade , high taxes, an expansive and ever-expanding federal government, an anemic national defense and a host of things at which conservatives rightly recoil. Now, newly released KGB documents give hard evidence of the Senator’s efforts to secretly work with the Soviet government (the KGB, no less) to undermine the foreign and military policies of President Reagan. The documents are indisputably accurate, and some of them were first reported in The Times of London as early as ... market research, surveys and trends

Genome.gov | March 1996 Senate Hearing on NIH Revitalization
The Human Genome Project is a historic 15-year research endeavor with the goal of producing detailed maps of the 23 pairs of human chromosomes and sequencing the 3 billion nucleotide bases that make up the human genome. The primary mission of the project is to develop research tools -- genetic and physical maps, DNA sequence information, and new technology -- to allow researchers to find and analyze genes quickly and efficiently. The project thus far has been successful in meeting or exceeding the goals outlined in its original plan. County imposes contracts on union
WOODSTOCK – The McHenry County Board took a hard line with the union representing its deputy coroners and Animal Control staff. Board members voted Tuesday evening to impose take-it-or-leave-it contracts with both units, represented by Service Employees International Union Local 73. County negotiators declared an impasse after two years of bargaining and three meetings apiece with a federal mediator. The County Board spent about an hour and 15 minutes in closed session with an outside labor attorney, but voted to impose both contracts in a matter of minutes. They voted, 18-2, to impose the deputy coroner contract, and, ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
New national HIV/AIDS strategy an example of homegrown activism
Together with AIDS activists across the nation, Boston advocates lobbied for new strategy that focuses on gay community. President Barack Obama announced Tuesday, July 13 the implementation of a new national strategy to meet the needs of Americans living with HIV/AIDS. The plan is the United States’ first-ever coordinated strategy to address the epidemic in its thirty years of known existence. The groundbreaking national strategy -- influenced in part by recommendations from local HIV/AIDS activists -- will devote more resources to curtailing the spread of the disease among those most vulnerable to infection, including gay ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

When Ronald Reagan was in office did he borrow money from the ...
No, but he did sign into law the Railroad Retirement Solvency Act in 1983. Here is his speech in the Rose Garden after signing the bill. Just a few months ago, there was legitimate alarm that the Railroad Pension System would soon run out of money. Without legislative action, rail industry pensions would have been reduced by 40 percent beginning this October. In addition, a second crisis has arisen. The Railroad Unemployment and Sickness Insurance System was so insolvent that the interest on its debt to the Rail Pension Fund would exceed its income. It was time to act and act in a spirit of bipartisan cooperation. This bill will ...
What song did Ted Kennedy's friend Nick Littlefield sing today?
The strands of Sen. Ted Kennedy's political and personal life will be knitted together during a Friday night tribute at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, with the final speaker Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of the slain president. Meanwhile, the family is keeping the public up to date on Kennedy's farewell on a Twitter account. On Friday, the public continued to stream past Kennedy's flag-draped casket at the JFK Memorial. As I write this, at 10 a.m., a Kennedy twitter (@kennedynews) has recently noted, "Mass. Treasurer Tim Cahill in line. State house and senate arrive together at 11."
