In 2006, the Government of Southern Sudan's Ministry of Education agreed to change its name to Juba National University. At present it is the only university in Sudan which maintains English as its language of instruction after the Islamic revolution, to meet the needs of its largely southern Sudanese non-Arabic speaking students and benefit from international teaching material. It mostly serves students from the ten southern states of Southern Sudan, and Sudan in general. Juba University is in the process of being transferred from a Khartoum campus to the capital of Southern Sudan Juba City in Central Equatoria state.
