Economic theories suggest that a firm’s “corporate culture,” defined as the shared beliefs within a firm about the optimal course of action, can matter for its policy choices. In this paper, we approach culture empirically by using a panel of parent-spinoff firm pairs that allows us to identify culture effects in corporate finance practices from behavior that is inherited by a spinoff firm from its parent firm after the firms split up.
