The current study investigated the impact of the political context of performance appraisal by examining the effects of organizational goals on performance ratings. A second purpose of the study was to investigate whether it is possible to reduce the effects of political influences by providing raters with normative information. Participants rated a "subordinate's" performance subsequent to receiving lenient or harsh organizational goals and normative performance information (present or absent). Results suggest that leniency goals resulted in significantly higher performance ratings than severity goals. However, ...

How to Minimize Politics in Your Company
In all my years in business, I have yet to hear someone say: “I love corporate politics.” On the other hand, I meet plenty of people who complain bitterly about corporate politics—sometimes even in the companies they run. So, if nobody loves politics, why all the politics? Political behavior almost always starts with the CEO. Now you may be thinking: “I hate politics, I’m not political, but my organization is very political. I clearly didn’t cause this.” Sadly, you needn’t be political to create extreme political behavior in your organization. In fact, it’s often the least political CEOs who run the most ferociously political ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Fed-up cop rips 'hacks' running department
To be a police officer is to make hard decisions. Stop this guy or that guy? Go through the front door or around the back? Shoot or don't shoot? Later, those decisions get second-guessed, by the brass, by the media, by the officers themselves. Sometimes an action that some view as heroic others find deplorable. On July 19, Lt. John R. Andrews made a hard decision. He'd had enough. He'd been silent long enough. After careful thought, he pressed a button on his home computer, posting online a 3,000-word critique of the Police Department with the academic-sounding title, "A City at War with Itself: Chicago -- ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Performance Appraisal | LinkedIn Answers | LinkedIn
I have a been in the employment field for more than 20 years and have viewed the issue from the perspective of attorneys involved in litigating employment disputes and as a mediator and arbitrator in resolving the disputes. Most recently, I have done training inside companies in how to find ways to better engage employees so that productivity, morale and customer satisfaction can improve. I do support the use of the performance appraisal. However, the purpose is to both coach and measure performance. A properly designed appraisal coupled with the right coaching can get the job done. However, that assumes that those who issue the ...
