It was the world's first consistently inhabited long-term research station in space, and the first of the third generation type of space station, constructed from 1986 to 1996 with a modular design . The station was in operation for fifteen years until March 23, 2001, when it was deliberately de-orbited, breaking apart during atmospheric re-entry over the South Pacific Ocean . The station currently holds the record for the longest continuous manned presence in space , at eight days short of ten years, and was occupied for a total of twelve and a half years of its fifteen-year lifespan. Mir had the capacity to ...

“China’s current economy remains good, but the domestic and international environment is extremely complicated,” Wen said while addressing a symposium in Changsha, capital of central China’s Hunan Province. All major players involved in the creation, diffusion, and commercialization of R&D have experienced changes in how innovation activities are financed, organized, and performed ( Jankowski 2001a ; Mowery 1998 ). Well-known risks of conducting scientific research and commercializing its results have been compounded by the increased speed and interdisciplinary nature of technological developments. In this environment, collaborations and alliances, at home or overseas, allow partners to share R&D costs, pool risks, and enjoy access to firm-specific know-how and commercialization resources ( Hagerdoon, Link, and Vonortas 2000 ; ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
International Cooperation For Development.
In the PSOE's 1982 election manifesto, the strengthening and co-ordination of international co-operation had been established as an additional necessity. The drafting in 1986 of the Annual International Co-operation Plan and, in 1988, the Spanish Agency for International Co-operation, made it possible to merge institution and group together dispersed responsibilities in this field and improve co-ordination between the various departments. Especially significant was the Co-operation Plan for 1993, since it was is the first to be drafted by the Spanish Government as a member of the Development Aid Committee of the OECD. Obama Backs Away from Intergalactic Domination
Space: to President Obama, it’s an opportunity for nations to join gloved hands and perform a glorious multinational spacewalk, all for the good of science. But he’s not ready to rule it out as a potential battlefield, either. In the just-released National Space Strategy for the United States of America (PDF), Obama laid out a vision of a harmonious celestial order based around international cooperation for the advancement mutual interests — scientific research chief among them. Space is treated as a heavenly commons, and access to it is, accordingly, not for any nation to deny to any other. “As ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
The International Society of Stem Cell Researchers Comes to Town
Sunday, June 20th, 2010. I was waiting for my daughter, Desiree Reed-Francois, to swim in from Alcatraz, the old prison island in San Francisco Bay. There was no reason to worry, I told myself. Desiree was in top shape. Associate athletic director for the University of Tennessee, she runs or lifts weights every day, takes part in full marathons routinely. But there had been that article about great white sharks being spotted in the Bay.... She had reminded me that her chances of being attacked by sharks were less than mine of being struck by lightning as I waited for her. But logic was no help. See you in a bit, I said, careful ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Center on International Cooperation
Built for a different age, different threats, and a different balance of world power, our current multilateral system does not fully meet today's global security challenges, ranging from climate change and nuclear proliferation to civil strife and terrorism. No nation, including the United States, can insulate itself from these threats nor solve these transborder problems alone. The Center on International Cooperation, The Brookings Institution, and Stanford University are undertaking a joint project entitled Managing Global Insecurity (MGI). The goal of MGI is to provide recommendations and generate political momentum for ...

From Wikipedia: Space and survival is the relationship between outer space and the long-term survival of the human species and civilization. It is based on the observation that space colonization and space science could prevent many human extinction scenarios. A related observation is the limited time and resources thought by some to be available for the colonization of space. Extinction can be prevented by improving the physical barrier or increasing the mean distance between people and the potential extinction event. For example, people may survive imminent explosions by being in a bunker or evacuating. Pandemics are ...

Well, I'm going to start by taking JS to task for saying flat out that Kyoto will fail. It is significant for bringing so many parties to the table and for laying the groundwork for whatever follows. History will, I'm sure, give Kyoto a lot of credit for accomplishing a great many things. That said, the level of cooperation needed to achieve substantive mitigation has got to go well beyond the groundwork laid down by Kyoto. There will need to be political elders and visionary leaders who can bridge the gaps that currently are hobbling efforts to move forward. Each nation will have to demonstrate a true ...
