designed to dissuade or prevent employers from forcing their employees to work excessively long hours. These laws may take into account other considerations than the humanitarian, such as increasing the overall level of employment in the economy. One common approach to regulating overtime is to require employers to pay workers at a higher hourly rate for overtime work. Companies may choose to pay workers higher overtime pay even if not obliged to do so by law, particularly if they believe that they face a backward bending supply curve of labour . Stop Cincinnati Police overtime abuses | cincinnati.com ...
The men and women who serve as police officers deserve our thanks, praise and respect. Just this past week, the image of a fortunate Cincinnati Police officer's bullet-riddled helmet again brought home how often and selflessly they risk their lives to protect us. But serving in the police department - or any government-related position, for that matter - is also a public trust, and with that comes a responsibility to use the public's resources wisely. The Cincinnati Police Department is failing in that responsibility, especially at the supervisory levels, with lax oversight on the use of overtime - costing millions ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Unions, county at odds over comp time; court action possible
A fight over compensatory time is brewing between Schuylkill County and at least one union that represents courthouse employees. "We're going to do whatever has to be done. It's going to get very ugly, I'm afraid," Guy Wiederhold, representative for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represents more than 100 county courthouse employees, said Wednesday afternoon. The dispute centers on when compensatory time, or future time off for extra hours or overtime in a given pay period, can be used. Please sir... I'd like some lunch | Ask MetaFilter
We work in North Carolina and are full time salaried + commission, and occasionally our employer tells us we are required to work through lunch because they feel its necessary. They always provide food for us but we don't have any say in what is provided (its usually pizza). This happens 3-4 times a month minimum with very little notice. We already work from 8:30am to 6pm so losing our hour lunch break is a huge problem. I love my job and my company but I don't think it's fair to email us one morning that we can't leave for lunch that day. Life's not fair, but is this practice legal? The North Carolina ...
