Politics In The Office

You've heard it said often: Avoid discussion of sex, money, religion and politics. So, why do so many people love to broach these controversial topics in the office? "Politics, in particular, is hard to avoid because it affects all of our lives so personally," says Richard Brenner, principal of Chaco Canyon Consulting. He notes that the presidential election has dominated news conversations across the country for months and quips about the candidates inevitably crop up in even casual elevator discussions. The reality is that you've probably already participated in or overheard political discussions at the ...
Why You Should Stop Reading Career Advice Columns | Personal ...
Having just finished reading an article by a popular syndicated columnist entitled “7 Things You Should Never Wear to an Office Party” (”No pants? No problem!”), a couple of things occur to me. First, do I have enough medication in the house to kill myself? And second, why isn’t everyone tired of career advice yet? It’s as if every high-school guidance counselor and employment agency manager who ever lived was awakened — perhaps by some kind of ultrasonic alarm from a passing spacecraft — and huddled together from lonely graves the world over, platoon-like, to attack us. In short, ... market research, surveys and trends
Networking Inside the Company Walls | The People Equation
This post is part of a series on positive office politics, or what we’re calling The P Quotient. It’s a collaborative effort with fellow bloggers Jane Perdue , Mike Henry and Susan Mazza . Jane kicked off the series with a look at the competencies cited as key to being politically astute. She also takes a swipe at the myth that politics in the office is a bad thing.  Check out the full post here .       One of the four behaviors resident in people who “play politics” in a positive way (as identified by researchers at the University of Florida) is networking . 01/01/2009 - New Mexico Politics with Joe Monahan
say his US Senate confirmation for commerce secretary may not be completed until late February and that he could be around to guide the Legislative session until then. The session starts January 20 and runs for sixty days. But Washington watchers say it's possible Bill's confirmation could come much earlier. It's happened before, they say, so he could be confirmed and ready to go to Washington by the end of January. Earlier state House Speaker Ben Lujan openly pined about having Big Bill around for a good portion of the session. The two have been tight as a vise and will play until the last hand is dealt. OBR ignored 550000 state workers in job loss calculations
OBR interim chairman Sir Alan Budd (left, with George Osborne), is expected to face searching questions at the Treasury committee next Tuesday. Photograph: Chris Ratcliffe Pool/EPA Fears rose last night that job losses in the public sector will be higher than forecast by George Osborne's new tax and spending watchdog after it emerged the Office for Budget Responsibilty used a narrower definition of the state workforce than official statisticians. Marry outside Va. and it may not count
Marriages that take place outside of Virginia are not valid in the Commonwealth, even if the couple has obtained a legal Virginia marriage license and the ceremony is performed by a person authorized to do so in Virginia, reporter Rosalind Helderman tells us over at the Virginia Politics blog. Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) issued the legal opinion in May in response to a question from the clerk of the Prince William County court regarding a couple whose marriage ceremony took place in Bethesda. But the opinion -- one of six Cuccinelli has issued since May 6 -- was not posted online. The attorney general's ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

For too long office politics has been thought of as a manipulating device. Instead, recognize office politics as a communication tool that will help you effectively adapt. You should definitely secure a copy of Office Politics: Seizing Power, Wielding Clout by Marilyn Moats Kennedy, the guru of office politics. In this book she recommends you prepare a rough organization chart where you work. Office politics exists everywhere: churches and temples, colleges and universities, corporate giants and small firms, and, of course government at all levels. That subject can make or break relationships, and oftentimes, can be the ...

Are you experiencing political peer pressure to vote for a certain ...
Actually, yes I am. My mom's pissed off at me because I'm voting for the better candidate, which is Obama. What REALLY aggravates me about that, though, is she just votes for the party, not the person. She has NO idea what he even wants to do. 2 years ago I'm feeling pressured by my co-workers, who all want to vote for McCain. But there's no way, Obama gets my vote. And I think I'll be able to swing a couple of them my way. But I'm usually a good employee and I don't discuss politics in the office. Maybe I'll bend that rule and be a bad girl. 2 years ago
