Many people recall fitting LEGO blocks together in their childhood, but few can say they programmed and built a LEGO robot for an international competition.  Eight fourth- and fifth-grade students at Cascade View Elementary did just that. After three months of weekly after-school meetings, the group placed 15th against 22 other schools Dec. 13 at a regional competition in Bellevue.   The Cascade View students prepare their robot for a time trial. This is the only version of this game created and, unusually for Knowledge Adventure, is still being sold over ten years after its initial release in 1996. It is currently included as the "Fundamentals" disc of JumpStart Advanced 3rd Grade . Set in a retro-futuristic universe , the game concerns Polly Spark, the bratty daughter of an apparently very wealthy inventor , and her attempt to alter history so that her inane answers to a history quiz she failed will be correct. To do this, she sends twenty-five reprogrammed robots back in time and, with her father conveniently away on a business trip, she takes over Mystery ...

I think that age group is too young to build robots on any informative level. I'm sorry, but they just won't "get it". Instead, why don't you buy some working robotic toys and let the kids program them to repeat an action, maybe, or just play with them? Maybe stage a battle with robotic dinosaurs or something? That would be way better for a five year old than actually building a working system. I don't think you quite understand the mind of some young boys. R3.0 has been trying to build Transformers and other devices out of sticks and soda cans, and he's been doing that since he was 4 or 5. In ...

So how does a robot that can move omni-directionally work? The trick is that it uses special wheels . . . The omni-wheel is not actually just a single wheel, but many wheels in one. There is the big core wheel, and along the peripheral there are many additional small wheels that have the axis perpendicular to the axis of the core wheel. The core wheel can rotate around its axis like any normal wheel, but now that there are additional wheels perpendicular to it, the core wheel can also move parallel to it's own axis. Below are a few of the available omni-wheels on the market. The wheel size and diameter are dependent on ...
