The percentage of professors with tenure at Alabama's major universities has fallen over the past five years as schools have tightened budgets and sought ways to keep flexibility in their faculty. In 2004, professors with tenure at the University of Alabama's main campus in Tuscaloosa made up 65 percent of the faculty; by 2008, the most recent year reported, that number had fallen to 58 percent. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, it slipped from 45 percent to 41 percent, and at Auburn University, from 70 percent to 67 percent. But the sharpest decrease -- from 60 percent in 2004 to 51 percent in 2008 -- came ...
Hopi Dictionary : Hopìikwa Lavàytutuveni: A Hopi Dictionary of the Third Mesa Dialect with an English-Hopi Finder List and a Sketch of Hopi Grammar was published by the Dictionary Project at the Bureau of Applied Anthropology, University of Arizona . Some of the Hopi community tried to prevent it from being published because they did not want non-Hopis to have access to the Hopi language , which they held to be the specific cultural heritage of the Hopi community. After a period of discussions and legal proceedings the dictionary was published in 1998.

Confronting massive budget deficits, school districts throughout the country have been sending out notices (“pink slips”) to employees this spring, warning them that they are unlikely to have a job in the fall. The bloodletting is worst in California, Illinois, New York, Michigan, and New Jersey, but nearly every region in the country is affected. Pink slips were sent out to 22,000 teachers in California, 17,000 in Illinois, and 15,000 in New York. The jobs of 8,000 school employees in Michigan, 6,000 in New Jersey, and 5,000 in Oklahoma may also be axed. These numbers are expected to increase in coming months. SABBATHDAY LAKE SHAKER VILLAGE, Maine -The land here is bountiful: 1,800 acres of lakefront property bursting with life, from the row upon row of orchards to the sprawling pastures where the beasts of the field get their fill. The human-built edifices dotting the landscape match the natural wealth. The dozen or so historical buildings are a testament to an industrious population, proficient in farming and manufacturing. They erected barns, communal living quarters, factory space, a house for herbs and places of worship. The village here dates to 1783 and is still productive. The inhabitants tend to the livestock; they raise the ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Several years ago, I examined the enrollment trends in industrial arts/technology teacher education programs from 1970 to 1990 ( Volk, 1993 ). The analysis indicated university programs and student enrollment numbers suffered a precipitous decline from the 1970 levels. For instance, by 1990 the number of students graduating with industrial arts/technology education teaching degrees were less than one-third the number graduating twenty years earlier. An examination was also made as to the detrimental effects non-teaching options such as industrial technology had on teacher preparation program numbers. As a result of this ...

At home on a recent break, I tried studying in a number of public libraries and found that most were noisier than the local Starbucks. It wasn't just the young people and cellphone talkers you might expect; the worst offenders were senior citizens and a few librarians themselves (one of whom read off the names of all the presidents over the phone in a normal-to-loud voice.) Whispering seemed completely out of place, the relic of a bygone era. The same is true of my university library. I know there are a lot of librarians here; has there been a major policy shift in libraries over the last few years, or have they just ...

I'm mostly curious about short and sweet things - stuff like "As a dentist, I've learned that you really should floss", or "It's worth it to understand the Fundamental Theorems of Calculus, even if you don't like math". as someone with a BA in English and History, i wish more people knew that the answer is almost always, "it depends." as someone with a BEd, i wish the general public knew how much work goes into being a teacher (and how much more goes into being a good teacher). A rotten apple spoils the bunch. I'm a teacher. Different classes have different personalities, and I think the biggest factor ...
