The Value of Middle Management

the value of middle management special research report Photo by
The old definition of a middle manager—those senior staff in charge of overseeing the details of day-to-day management and reporting to top management—is too narrow, says Leslie Willcocks, Professor of Technology Work and Globalization at the London School of Economics (LSE) and head of its Outsourcing Unit. In today’s complex and global business environment, middle management is the “glue that holds organizations together,” Willcocks says. At outsourcing companies, middle managers are even more important, responsible as they are for working externally with customers and suppliers and internally with senior ...
Cascade – Better Practices for Effective Delivery of Information ...
This article is written for people who work at companies that have an IT department to support their non-IT business. In comparison, this article is not written for people who work at IT companies, from Google on down to someone selling excel macros. The main reason is that I have not worked for an IT company and, although I have worked with many in customer-vendor relationships, I do not feel qualified to write about something I do not have experience with. However, even companies selling IT need some other IT to help run their business, so perhaps some of my experiences may overlap with theirs. Given that, let us consider the ... market research, surveys and trends

The 2006 survey included results from the 73 largest national banks and covered the 12-month period ending March 31, 2006. Although mergers and acquisitions have altered the survey population, the survey has covered substantially the same group of banks for the past 10 years. Timeline of the Great Depression
This page features two timelines: the first for general events of the Roaring 20s and the Great Depression, the second for leading economic indicators. The importance of these timelines cannot be emphasized enough. Seeing the order in which events actually occurred dispels many myths about the Great Depression. One of the greatest of these myths is that government intervention was responsible for its onset. Truly massive intervention began only under the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt in 1933, who was sworn in after the worst had already hit. Although his New Deal did not cure it, all the leading economic indicators ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

"Middle management is a layer of management in an organization whose primary job responsibility is to monitor activities of subordinates and to generate reports for upper management."[1] Odds are it means a pay raise at the beginning, but unless you work hard to develop the skills that a middle manager needs to be successful, you may actually be less employable in a few years as you lose your technical edge. How to present the value of project managment / risk management to ...
I don't recommend senior management come out and say project/risk management is needed because projects will be executed more efficiently, quicker, and cheaper. True, it will, but a statement like that implies senior mgmt is disatisified with currrent productivity and, consequently, morale could suffer. A second problem is related to how adults learn. Most middle managers are fairly competent at their jobs and they will process the idea and come to their own conclusions no matter how senior mgrs spin it. They will either see the benefit before implementing formal methods or not. So, instead tie it to some initiative like ...
