The Data Analysis and Report Toolkit (DART) is now a well-developed Student Information System (SIS), and has many additional modules than the original version. The district is its fourth full year of using DART with 17 facilities, including 15 K-12 schools, and a regional pre-vocational facility. Kuali Student Services (KSS) is coming to UBC. It’s been two years in the planning, with another 6 or 7 years to go before the system is fully up and running here. Q: What is Kuali? What will it mean to UBC? A: It’s important that we understand what Kuali is and isn’t. On the Border: News reporters are now enemies of truth
People who live along the border have a new online patrol. We are all now scouts on the lookout for the news reporters, television crews and filmmakers who come to the US/Mexico border to promote themselves and tell the same old worn out story about drug running along the border. The underlying theme of their stories is always the same: White people are good and brown people are bad. If the news reporter is really pumped up by border hysteria, they like to include Native Americans, including Tohono O'odham and Mohawks, into their US flag-waving articles, like this one: ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
FOSS: Free and Open Source Software
is an abbreviation for Free and Open Source Software. In other words, FOSS is software whose source code is openly available. People can install and even modify FOSS as they please, so long as they follow a few basic requirements listed in the license. This arrangement makes FOSS the opposite of proprietary software, and one of the most original developments in the history of IT. FOSS is a combination of two terms, free software and open source . Both free software and open source refer to software that is licensed in the same way, but the separate terms imply a difference in the reasons for the licensing. JA-SIG Conference Presentation
The issue of major open-source projects in higher education has taken on a new sense of urgency in light of the recent acquisitions of the major vended solutions. Senior administrators who are looking to replace a legacy SIS are faced with two equally unpalatable choices: either a high risk (and potentially unsustainable) custom development project or, alternatively, a costly and inflexible vended solution that is unlikely to be responsive to the unique needs of different institutions. For some, the vision of open-source collaborative projects suggests a possible third option that avoids the pitfalls of a vended solution and ...

Comparison of free/open source student information systems? | Ask ...
A non-profit organization I do work for is looking for a free, open-source, web-based student information system for tracking grades, attendance, counseling notes and doing scheduling for their summer educational programs. Ease of setup and hosting isn't a concern; I have lots of experience on setting up F/OSS database apps on various platforms, and they actually have extensive hosting options I'll be able to use. Ease of actual use tracking student information, on the other hand, is paramount, and I'm finding that aspect difficult to evaluate. They'd prefer to host in house, but external hosting isn't ...
Which Open Source ERP system is your favorite and why: xTuple ...
I looked at all of these (and more) about a year ago and decided that xTuple was the one Friendly Systems would offer and support. There is a real company behind it and it is a finished product. The free version is useful and upgrades for it are simple. The commercial versions are very sophisticated, especially for manufacturers. You can change the code but you don't have to. It will work for a large number of situations right out of the box. It is open source you don't have to be a techie to appreciate, and, maybe most importantly of all, the people at xTuple actually listen to suggestions. posted 1 month ago ...
