(USA). Most analysts have characterized present Sino-American relations as complex and multi-faceted, with the United States and the People's Republic of China being neither allies nor enemies. Generally, the U.S. government and military establishment do not regard the Chinese as an adversary, but as a competitor in some areas and a partner in others. As of 2008, by purchasing power parity (PPP), the United States has the world's largest economy while China's economy is the second largest. China has the world's largest population while the United States' population is the third largest. The two countries ...

With the U.S. closed for the long weekend yesterday, not much happened in the gold market on Monday… although gold came under a bit of selling pressure starting at 1:00 p.m. in Hong Kong. Every commentator I read yesterday said that the Comex was closed yesterday… and maybe it was… but someone was trading both gold and silver after London closed yesterday.  And whoever it was, stopped trading at 1:15 p.m. New York time yesterday afternoon. Volume in gold was virtually nothing when I got up yesterday morning around 11:00 a.m. Eastern time… under 10,000 contracts.  But that little closing spike in the last ... market research, surveys and trends
Andy Grove on the Need for US Job Creation and Industrial Policy ...
Technological progress is essential to improving standards of living, or even maintaining it given our increasing natural resource constraints. And I don’t think that we can just temporarily turn back the clock to fix our current unemployment problem. Far better to temporarily institute a reduced hours (work sharing) program like the Germans or like advocated by Dean Baker. That involves say a 20% reduction in hours (4 day work week) with the costs shared between government, business and employees. Possibly true, but when somebody says “replacing machines with humans” that’s not what I think of since, ... market research, surveys and trends

Global systemic crisis / Housing, financial institutions, stock ...
As anticipated by LEAP/E2020 in the past months, the United States are really sinking into the 2007 « very great depression », with a tipping point of the global systemic crisis coming up in April as indicated in last month’s GEAB ( GEAB N°12 . In the coming weeks, the contagion will spread from real estate to the whole of the financial sector and to US household consumption, bearing severe consequences on the results of various economic sectors in the US and on the US market. Simultaneously, these tendencies will accelerate the winding up of the trans-Pacific trade war which, as early as December 2006, LEAP/E2020 anticipated ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Andy Grove from Intel is Wrong
I can’t believe what I read this weekend from Andy Grove, the guy who built Intel into what it is today. I have infinite respect for what he’s accomplished and I can only hope to accomplish 1/100 as much. There is nobody more legit than him in terms of American business and entrepeneurship. So I’m confused when he writes in his  article , How to Make an American Job before It’s Too late: “Levy an extra tax on the product of offshored labor. (If the result is a trade war, treat it like other wars — fight to win.)” Darcy Padilla Andy Grove He basically states that we lose too many of the ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Waiting for a Trade Policy
The White House has announced that it wants to move ahead with a long-ignored trade pact with South Korea. The deal was reached by former President George W. Bush, but with President Obama planning to visit South Korea for a summit meeting of the Group of 20 major economies in November, he has now committed to resolving the outstanding issues and submitting the treaty for ratification after the fall elections. This is good news, to be sure. But it is hardly enough at a time when protectionism is rising around the world. Until now, the Obama administration’s trade strategy has been limited to hoping that a world economic ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

The effects of Smoot-Hawly tariffs and trade war on naitons with ...
I believe the US needs to raise tariffs as a way to get ourselves out of our economic mess-and massive debt. The classic argument against doing so is smoot-hawly however this was passed when we had a trade surplus- so it is irrelevant to our current situation so I would like to know if anyone have information on how the trade war effected trade deficits? Member since: October 02, 2007 Total points: 69411 (Level 7) Badge Image: ROTFL. 1. You do realize that treaties that the U.S. has signed do have the force of law and that raising tariffs may well be a violation of those treaties? Are you really willing to do that to our ...
China v world as a trade war comes closer (?)
“WHEN some foreign nation restrains ... the importation of some of our manufactures ... revenge naturally dictates retaliation.” It sounds like some trade-union protectionist, but actually this was written by Adam Smith in his Wealth of Nations, the bible of free traders. And once restrictions are installed, “freedom of trade should be restored only by slow gradations” to avoid throwing lots of people out of work. Smith, of course, saw retaliation as a means of forcing a trading partner to end its restrictions in a process of mutual disarmament. Now, that process is played out in the World Trade Organisation and against a ...
