alternative asset managers special research report Photo by
The equity market has been a roller coaster, characterized by bone-jarring volatility and single-stock blow-ups that are enough to make even the most steely-eyed hedge fund manager cringe. And private equity firms have seen arbitrage spreads explode, fueled by the knock-on effects of broken credit markets and concerns over whether the PE firms or the banks will walk away from agreed-to transactions. But these are merely observations. The real question is, how will a persistent down market impact the returns of the hedge fund and private equity industries? My handicapping: most participants will suffer and suffer badly. Why? In ...
Information Arbitrage - Alternative Asset Managers: Does Going ...
(instead of long cycles of 50-60 years, say, 20 years), with boom/bust cycles characterized by overshooting in both directions (assets become too dear at market tops and too cheap at market bottoms). And I view both returns and assets under management (AUM) in the alternative asset space in the same way. When returns are relatively attractive assets flow in, after which point it becomes harder and harder to maintain relative out-performance. During this phase risk goes up as market participants reach for return, increasing volatility near market tops. Predictably, both fewer good investment opportunities and heightened risk ... market research, surveys and trends

Wall Street: Who Deserves a $100 Million Bonus - Newsweek
The controversy surrounding the bonus promised to Andrew Hall, the phenomenally successful energy trader at Phibro, a unit of Citi, is  coming to a head . Hall's contract entitles him to a $100 million bonus. But in order to make good on the deal, Citi, which is now hugely supported and partially owned by taxpayers, must get the blessing of Kenneth Feinberg, the Solomonic attorney who administered the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund and is now the Obama administration's Wall Street pay czar. Feinberg will have to consider whether it is proper for an institution that, without substantial taxpayer support, couldn't ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Will the EU limit hedge fund pay?
to regulate bank bonuses – announced on Thursday - will hit Mayfair hard: the onerous restrictions on pay, says Robert Peston, the BBC’s business editor, will apply to hedge funds too : I have learned that the bonuses paid to senior executives at hedge funds and fund managers are to be subject to strict conditions, under new EU-wide rules that have been agreed by EU members states and legislators. Under the new rules, agreed by member states and legislators, only 30 per cent of any bonus for bankers and fund managers could be paid straightaway in cash – and the proportion would fall to a fifth for large bonuses. market trends, news research and surveys resources

What is behind the hiring of Driss Ben Brahim by GLG Partners?
Investors willing to dip a toe into the stock's of newly public alternative investment managers have been burned over the past year, including shareholders of GLG Partners Inc. (GLG-NYSE). GLG's stock was pummeled earlier this year from the departure of 37-year old Greg Coffey, who accounted for an inordinate amount of the firms incentive fees. But GLG has made a high profile hire to take over Coffey's emerging markets strategy, and will also launch a Global Macro platform headed up by former Goldman star Driss Ben-Brahim: Driss joins GLG from Goldman Sachs where he has been a partner responsible for several ...
How much will I save in taxes by donating this item? | Ask MetaFilter
I've never really understood the economics of donating something valuable like a car for a tax write off. I am wondering what I will save in taxes by donating this item versus selling it. I'm having trouble calculating the exact value of the tax deduction to me... I know there are tons of caveats about which charity, the condition of the item, how to determine fair market value. Those are not my concern here. I'm struggling with the basic economics of making this donation versus trying to sell the item, and which will net me more. US federal income taxes here for the purposes of this question... Variables: 1) The ...
