FRS Pension Plan

frs pension plan special research report Photo by www.hr.ufl.edu
I recently had the opportunity to speak with several groups of county employees in regard to the various options they have within the Florida Retirement System.  It was surprising to discover quite a few people did not know anything about the FRS Investment Plan , and several did not even know it existed.  Of the almost eighty people I spoke to over the two days and four sessions, a majority had not been on the MyFRS.com site, and very few had ever done the hypothetical illustrations.  On the basis of this experience, it seems appropriate to diverge from the political scene that has dominated recent weeks, and discuss some real ...

Caveat Lectores by Jeff Carnes: Caveat Lectores on Tax Watch ...
The Government Cost Savings Task Force, organized by Florida Tax Watch, released a 125-page report during a news conference on Thursday, March 4, 2010. This report identifies productivity and efficiency improvements and other cost savings measures to change the way Florida government works, much of it in operational and administrative spending. Without trying to add editorial comment, I have included a verbatim copy of portions of the Tax Watch Proposals that affect Florida FRS pensions. http://www.floridataxwatch.org/resources/pdf/03042010FullReport.pdf What follows is tedious and grim for Florida public employees. The High Cost of Hidden Pension Promises
For mayors across the country a single budget item threatens their cities' capacity to maintain parks, keep the streets safe, pick up the trash and educate children--all the important things a city government does. That single cost is pension and health care payments to retired city employees. The notion of pension obligations is abstract, and hardly high on the list of citizen concerns. But within a decade, mountains of unfunded liabilities will seriously erode the quality of city life and force taxes so high that those with the ability to pay will abandon cities, putting municipalities into a death spiral of high costs ... market research, surveys and trends

The Florida State Board of Administration (SBA), which handles investments for state employees and retirees, announced that it oversaw solid growth in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) pension fund — adding almost $10 billion to its market value in the 2009-2010 fiscal year and paying more than $4.5 billion to retirees. Skimming through the GOP gubernatorial job plans
castigating each other on immigration, abortion, and corporate fraud -- voters might be hard-pressed to decipher how they plan to address Florida’s most vexing problem: creating jobs. Both of the principal Republicans running for governor – as well as likely Democratic nominee Alex Sink -- have released jobs plans, acknowledging on the stump that polls show the economy is the dominant area of concern among voters. And both GOP candidates are pledging to use tax cuts and regulatory reform to generate big economic turnarounds. Yet both camps have been evasive about how they plan to make that happen. And neither man – nor, for that ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Who are the leaders in liability-driven investing (LDI) for ...
You've opened a real can of worms with this one. I could go on and on, and would be willing to do so privately, but publicly, I'll try to keep it brief. Most of the big players are leaders in LDI. And, US, there are prominent US companies (UK companies as well) that have taken the lead. The most notable move to this strategy was problem Boots in the UK. After the passage of FRS 17, the UK pension accounting standard, Boots moved to a 100% liability matched bond portfolio (almost liability-matched, anyway). In evaluating why companies should consider using LDI, one must consider what sources of risk there are in pension ...
Comments on Does AIG insure the Pension Fund for the United States ...
Would this explain the urgency to bail them out ? Is this just another self-serving act by a bunch of self-serving bastards ? I recv'd an e-mail about this, but can't confirm it, maybe you can.  Discuss this question (4 comments) why can't I answer? 1 but by Paulson(Secy Treasury) and Bernanke(Fed Reserve). The cynics among us think that it was to protect Goldman Sachs where Paulson used to be CEO. AIG had written credit default swaps covering about $10B and sold them to GS. Failure of AIG would have made the CDS's worthless. Further GS would have lost money on the securities that the CDS's covered.
