hedge funds investing special research report Photo by 2.bp.blogspot.com
Owning intellectual property isn’t something we normally consider when we think of hedge funds. Thanks to relentless negative media coverage and endless political smear, we’ve come to accept that hedge funds are illicit ticking time bombs, recklessly leveraged casinos run by nefarious shysters who’d destroy the entire economy if permitted to roam free. Bernie Madoff , a common criminal whose scheme the government had ample warning about, has unfairly become the poster child for an entire industry which, truth be told, has produced superior results for years. That’s the rub: Despite all the scapegoating ...
Alerted by his sons, federal authorities arrested Madoff on December 11, 2008. On March 12, 2009, Madoff pled guilty to 11 federal crimes and admitted to operating what has been called the largest investor fraud ever committed by an individual. On June 29, 2009, he was sentenced to 150 years in prison with restitution of $170 billion. According to the original federal charges, Madoff said that his firm had "liabilities of approximately US$ 50 billion". 3 4 Prosecutors estimated the size of the fraud to be $64.8 billion, based on the amounts in the accounts of Madoff's 4,800 clients as of November 30, 2008. 5 6 7 ...

How Hedge Funds Make Money | How Hedge Funds Work | Weakonomi¢s
hedge funds are shrouded in mystery. Much of this is thanks to a lack of regulation which leads to a lack of transparency, which leads to most people not really understanding what hedge funds are. For all intents and purposes, the best way to describe a hedge fund is that it’s a mutual fund. Mutual funds usually have a focus such as stocks, bonds, or a blend of the two. Hedge funds have a focus, but they also have a lot more liberties. Their strategies can be narrowly focused, or very broad. The idea is to make a return no matter what the market is doing. In fact, many funds don’t even think about an index ... market research, surveys and trends

Hedge fund managers in the UK have made appearances on the Naked Short Club, a hedge fund radio show in London.  The show is hosted by "Dr. Stu," who says he works in the hedge fund industry.  Dr. Stu interviews managers, talks about the latest hedge fund gossip and makes jokes between playing psychadelic rock songs from bands like the Stooges.   The show is mostly comedy with the host recently taking aim at German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her ban of short selling and convicted fraudster Bernie Madoff.  But the Naked Short Club also provides listeners with interesting interviews with hedge fund ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Book Review: Hedge Hogs
This is not an obvious time to be glorifying financial tycoons. Making enough money to buy your own private island might have earned you an airbrushed magazine cover a decade ago. Nowadays, though, the erstwhile Masters of the Universe are viewed with such opprobrium that one of their favorite lawyers told me recently he was advising his clients to soft-pedal their objections to financial reform legislation because the more Wall Street hates it, the better it plays on Main Street. Today’s populist mood has not deterred Sebastian Mallaby. In “More Money Than God,” his smart history of the hedge fund business, Mallaby does more ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

I have a strategic consulting firm working with Italian SMEs. With my company, I am thinking about the opportunity of investing in more or less 10 Italian start-ups in the next year. My goal would be to take a minority stake (around 5%) in each one of the invested companies. In principle I don't have a preferred industry or sector and am also interested in companies that can become good SMEs. I mean companies that not necessarily think of becoming the next Google. Now I am reasoning about the possible exits strategies for me. Here is what I thought: - First exit: Resell the equity to the other shareholders (this is the most ...
