Investing Against The Trend

investing against the trend special research report Photo by
Counter-trend strategies seek to enter a trade in the opposite direction of the apparent trend after detecting a larger than normal price deviation or overbought/oversold condition. Traders may use technical indicators and oscillators to help identify these conditions. For example, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has values between 0-100. Stocks are considered overbought at a level of 70 or higher. Stocks are considered oversold at a level of 30 or lower. While these criteria are helpful to determine entry and exit points, the trend may continue with the stock price continuing to decline or rise despite the indicator reading.
I think about it every day: “Why did so many investors have to be hurt by the financial crisis of 2008″?   In hindsight, it seems like the crisis was so obvious.  The now infamous credit market debt to GDP chart, the parabolic Case/Shiller housing chart, the 40:1 leverage ratios, the subprime problems, etc..  Weren’t they telltale signs that something was profoundly wrong with the economy?   It would seem so, but for some reason we can count the “experts” who actually predicted the crisis on two hands.  And many are even skeptical of this small sampling of prescient economists and analysts.  ... market research, surveys and trends

Investing in stocks is the best bet to beat inflation
With prices rising at double-digit rates, where does it pay to invest? An analysis of stock returns over alternative avenues of investment such as gold, bank deposits and commodity futures shows that equities have been most successful in giving inflation-beating returns. Over a 20-year period, according to the analysis, equities have managed a higher return compared to other asset classes during years of high inflation (Consumer Price Index in excess of 7 per cent). The Consumer Price Index has been above 7 per cent annually in all the years since 1990. The Top 6 Game-Changing Hedge Funds
The amount of money hedge funds make is only surpassed by the amount of secrecy surrounding how they make it.  To pull back the curtain on these financial wizards, Big Think asked Sebastian Mallaby , author of "More Money Than God: Hedge Funds and the Making of a New Elite," to describe the six hedge funds that have fundamentally changed the industry: 1. A. W. JONES This first game-changing hedge fund has to be the one that began the game, and that was the one set up by Alfred Winslow Jones in 1949, which is a lot earlier than most people think there were hedge funds.  Jones, who had run anti-Nazi missions ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Ethical Investing
A new set of “ethical” investment indices, FTSE4Good, jointly owned by the Financial Times and the London Stock Exchange, went live on July 31st, with licence fees being donated to the United Nations Children’s Fund. This is a nice gesture. But how much sense does ethical investment make? DOING good and making money have conventionally been seen as mutually exclusive. But today not even conventional wisdom embraces any longer the simplicities of God or Mammon. On July 31st the long-growing trend towards “ethical” investing received a quasi-official recognition of sorts from the ...

Global Investing: Foreign exchange, great economists, australian ...
I live in United Kingdom and transfer money to Australia regularly.  I follow foreign exchange websites as best I can but I can't understand why the value of the Australian dollar has gotten so strong against the UK pound (and the US dollar for that matter).  I wish someone could explain the trend in simple terms and whether this trend will continue? Answer In simple terms, people believe that investing in Australia is better than investing in the UK or the USA. As such, there is a market for currency just as there is a market for anything. If you want to buy things in Australia, you need Australian currency. ...
