Investing From the Top Down

investing from the top down special research report Photo by
In Investing from the Top Down, Anthony Crescenzi, esteemed financial author and chief bond strategist for Miller Tabak&Co., explains how to develop new, highly effective investment strategies by taking a macro view of the factors shaping industries and markets. Emphasizing the importance of economic and market cycles (as opposed to a bottom-up approach, which places valuation ahead of the big picture) top-down investing is better suited for today's global economy and will likely become the dominant strategy in the future. Crescenzi provides more than fifty tools for analyzing domestic and international trends and ...

Investing without understanding the economy is like taking a trip without knowing anything about the climate of your destination. Inclement weather can wreak havoc with a vacation, especially if it involves outdoor activities. Just so, putting hardearned money into the stock or bond market when economic conditions are unfavorable can destroy financial plans for a comfortable retirement, a new house, or a child’s college education. No one understands this better than Wall Street investment banks, brokers, and research institutions. All of these have adopted a top-down approach to securities analysis that begins with a forecast of ... market research, surveys and trends
Speaking of the Great Depression . . . | The Big Picture
Dan Greenhaus is at the Equity Strategy Group at Miller Tabak + Co. where he covers markets and portfolio theory. He has contributed several chapters to Investing From the Top Down: A Macro Approach to Capital Markets (by Anthony Crescenzi). This is his most recent commentary: ~~~ Attached is a chart of the S&P from the peak in 1929 until 1954. There are two things to observe. The first is that yes, if you bought at the end of the crash you progressively made money in stocks. Of course, that end in 1932 was 86% off the highs, but if you waited until then, you did okay. However, if you were one of the unlucky ones who bought ... market research, surveys and trends

Crescenzi: Libor, Credit Spreads, Treasurys - CNBC
Libor up at new high  - Peaks in spreads lagged the ending of past crises - Investors with steadier nerves than the consensus will win Substantial strains continue to exist in the money market, as evidenced by Libor and Treasury bill rates . Today (Wednesday), 3-month Libor was set at 3.476 percent, up a whopping 26.5 basis points on the day -- and the widest spread to the fed funds target since 1987. Investing: Sizing Up the Second Half
The first quarter of 2010 gave investors hope that the bull run that sprang from the March 2009 stock market lows would continue. The second quarter dashed those hopes in decisive fashion. What can we expect for the remainder of the year? The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index fell 1 percent on June 30 to finish the second quarter with a 12 percent loss (following a 4.9 percent gain in the first quarter, it was down 7.6 percent for the first half). The S&P 500 broke a four-quarter winning streak that drove the large-cap index up 47 percent. Late in the June 30 trading session, the S&P 500 hit a low at 1,028.33, the lowest ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
