Julia Gillard's rise to leadership of the Labor Party and the prime ministership has dialled down the perceived risk on investing in Australia's resources sector, but in the short term at least it has dialled it up elsewhere. Risk is up generally because Gillard rose to the heart of the Labor machine through the Left ventricle. At her first press conference as Prime Minister she bristled at the suggestion that she was a hostage to her political background, saying she defied anyone to point to any decision she had taken that indicated that factional loyalty had over-ridden her own convictions. Foreign Investment: Is Australia's Tax Appeal for Private Equity ...
As the fierce debate on the proposed resources super profits tax continues to rage and mining companies claim it will hurt foreign investor confidence in Australia, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has postponed a controversial decision about the tax treatment of foreign private equity profits.
