United Parcel Service this week is rolling out 200 new hybrid gas-electric delivery trucks in eight U.S. cities. Over the course of a year, the 200 new hybrid trucks are expected to reduce fuel consumption by roughly 176,000 gallons and cutting CO2 gases by nearly 1,800 metric tons. The move by UPS is part of a growing trend, identified in a new report from Pike Research about the global market for hybrid medium and heavy-duty trucks and buses. Pike forecasts an increase from 9,000 vehicles sold globally in 2010 to more than 100,000 vehicles in 2015. In the U.S., Pike expects annual sales of electric-drive trucks to grow from ...
Most PHEVs on the road today are passenger cars, but there are also PHEV versions of commercial vehicles and vans, utility trucks, buses, trains, motorcycles, scooters , and military vehicles. The cost for electricity to power plug-in hybrids for all-electric operation has been estimated at less than one quarter of the cost of gasoline . 1 Compared to conventional vehicles, PHEVs can reduce air pollution , dependence on petroleum and fossil fuels , and greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming unless the PHEV is charged by plugging into an electric utility where coal is the predominant fuel used to generate ...

1. Idle-off capability is when the engine automatically shuts down when the hybrid vehicle is braking, idling or coasting. The engine can also easily turn back on once the driver releases the brake and steps on the accelerator. 2. Regenerative braking is when the electric motor takes over when the car is slowing down. It also doubles as a generator in which energy lost while the hybrid vehicle is braking can be converted into electric power that recharges the battery . 3. Power assist and engine downsizing is when the electric motor kicks in to help move the car during acceleration. The size of the engine is virtually smaller ... market research, surveys and trends
For Big Oil, does the future look too much like the past? | Money ...
With Big Oil pumping out immense profits, you’d think cash would be available to fund renewable-energy programs. It is, and there's plenty of it, yet the majors' outsize earnings may be leading them back to the oil patch instead. In February, BP said it would regard its impressive solar and wind operations strictly for their equity value and might spin them off. So much for Beyond Petroleum. More recently, Royal Dutch Shell withdrew from a landmark wind project in Britain and in 2006 sold the lion’s share of its solar interests to a German firm. Hybrid vehicles help firms cut energy costs - CNBC Special Report ...
ROSWELL, Ga. - As fuel prices have reached record highs, gas-electric hybrid cars have made it to the consumer mainstream. But using hybrids in commercial fleets is new. For many companies, this new technology may be something of a gamble. Still, some big companies are investing in hybrids, and reducing fuel costs at the same time. One of those is UPS. It takes a lot of fuel to move 15 million packages a day. “We spent over $2.1 billion on fuel last year,” said Mike Herr, the shipping giant's vice president of environmental affairs. “That equates to about 4.8 percent of our operating revenue expenditure.” That’s one big ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Obama pushes energy-climate bill in oil spill speech
President Obama used an Oval Office address on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill to push for energy and climate legislation, but made clear that a variety of options are on the table. During his speech Tuesday evening, in which he also held BP to account for its role in the Gulf disaster, Obama said that the oil spill is a painful reminder of why the U.S. needs to cut its dependence on oil and make a transition to cleaner energy sources. For more than a year, Congress has been working on different versions of an energy and climate bill that, if passed into law, could have a significant impact on the pace of green-technology development . market trends, news research and surveys resources
UK businesses reluctant to switch to electric fleet vehicles
Despite growing commitments from car manufacturers and the UK government to create an electric car infrastructure, businesses in the UK remain wary of investing in electric fleet cars, according to a new report by Corporate Vehicle Observatory. The independent research, sponsored by Arval, a company car fleet operator, claims that compared to fleets in 13 other countries, UK company fleets are likely to show the slowest uptake of electric vehicles over the next three years. Investment in Renewable and Alternative Energy Technologies
Today, President Bush spoke to the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference and discussed the importance of renewable and alternative energy technologies to increasing America's energy security and addressing the long-term challenge of global climate change.  The more sources of energy we have, the less influence any one of them, such as oil, has over the United States' security and prosperity.  Renewable energies are some of the most promising new sources for energy because they are clean and because their supply can be regenerated. Whats the best way to invest in hybrid cars?-specifically lithium ...
Hm, as none of the currently-available hybrids use lithium ion batteries (they use nickel metal hydride batteries), it is hard to say where you would be best to invest. Future hybrids (such as the proposed PHEV version of the Toyota Prius and the upcoming Chevy Volt) may use lithium ion technology, but they are still being researched (safety concerns, battery lifespans, etc.) Toyota/Lexus and I think Honda get their hybrid batteries from Panasonic EV, and Ford/Mercury/Mazda from Sanyo. The Toyota hybrid design is well-tested (on the road since 1997), and is licensed to both Ford and Nissan. Toyota also has hybrid drivetrains ...
