I traded Goldman Sachs ( GS )  for some short-term profit recently, but in general found the headlines a little too hard to handle. Okay, so that was a bit tongue in cheek. I actually have a couple names in this sector on my short shopping list again. But the point I'm trying to make is that there is a less risky way to play the financials -  through their preferred shares, or you can do even better through closed-end funds of those preferreds that are trading at a discount to NAV. click to enlarge Above is a list ...

The Big Apple: “There's always a bull market somewhere”
"There’s always a bull market somehwere” is an optimist’s outlook for a bad market. If not nationally, then internationally; if not stocks, then bonds—when something goes down, something else goes up and is an investment opportunity. The saying has been cited in print since 1964, but appears to have been popularized in the 1990s and 2000s. Investing the Middle Way: 529 Plans: The 10% Penalty Solution, Part 1
Contributions are not deductible on federal returns; however, many states provide a deduction for contribution to in-state plans. Certain states even have deductions for contribution to out-of-state plans. Although the state income tax deduction has an upper limit (e.g., for contributions up to $12,000), there is no overall contribution limit that I’m aware of. [You should consult a tax advisor here. This IRS publication states that the amount of contribution cannot be more than the qualified education expenses of the beneficiary, but I’m not sure how it is enforced. Most plans have an account limit of $2-300,000 ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Slower growth lies ahead for the United States, say investment managers who responded to Russell Investment Group's September quarterly survey , as none of the managers believes that a recession is likely in the U.S. and half believe the U.S. will experience slower growth in the next six months compared to the annaul growth rate of 2.9% in the second quarter 2006. However, 10% of the managers believe the U.S. will grow at a stronger rate whereas a little more than 40% of the managers believe the U.S. will grow at a similar rate to the 2.9% at which it grew in the last quarter. Democrats' Midterm Message: "Move Forward" With us -- or go Back to Bush
The Democratic National Committee is out with a new ad that neatly encapsulates Democrats' message to voters for the midterm elections. The argument? Either "move forward" with us, or "go back to the same Republican policies that got us into this mess." Only one president makes an appearance in the spot - and it's not the current one. While President Obama is conspicuously absent from the spot, President Bush makes a cameo, presumably to remind voters what they left behind. Says an announcer in the spot: "This fall, America faces a big choice: Do we continue to move forward like Democrats are ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
As US troops leave Iraq, challenges will remain
UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Though the United States' drawdown in troops from Iraq will likely happen on time, Iraqis, along with remaining U.S. forces, still have work to do in order to ensure stability and security in the country, Patricia DeGennaro, a Middle East policy expert, told Xinhua in a recent interview. DeGennaro is an adjunct assistant professor at New York University and a senior fellow at the World Policy Institute. Doing It Just Right is the Middle Way
In the Dharma-door of investigating Chan, you must fix your attention on what you are doing. At all times, you should return the light and reflect within. Don't be too tense, and don't be too slack. It's said,     Too tight, and it'll break. Too slack, and it'll be loose. Neither tight nor slack, and it will turn out right. But neither tense nor slack is the Middle Way. Walking, standing, sitting and lying down, don't be apart from this. Once you leave this, you have missed it. What is this? It's the ultimate meaning of the Middle Way. Do you have a job? Are you in college? Is this money you might want to access soon or easily? Could you afford to lose half or all? How easy is it for you to come by money? How did you get this money? Did some relative give it to you? Did you work for it? At one point in my lifetime I had someone ask me if I thought the banker that helped them roll ...
