CDs are similar to savings accounts in that they are insured and thus virtually risk-free; they are "money in the bank" (CDs are insured by the FDIC for banks or by the NCUA for credit unions). They are different from savings accounts in that the CD has a specific, fixed term (often three months, six months, or one to five years), and, usually, a fixed interest rate . It is intended that the CD be held until maturity , at which time the money may be withdrawn together with the accrued interest . In exchange for keeping the money on deposit for the agreed-on term, institutions usually grant higher interest rates than ...

Bond Ladders vs. Layering with Bond Funds -- Seeking Alpha
Bonds are an important part of many portfolios, particularly for those investors in mid to late states of economic life, or for endowments or pensions. Bonds are important for capital preservation and portfolio volatility moderation.  In some cases, for experienced traders, they can also be a source of capital gains, but they are normally used for conservative purposes. One of the important risks with bonds is interest rate risk.  If interest rates rise, the value of issued bonds declines.  If interest rates fall, the value of issued bonds rises.  The longer the time horizon to maturity of a bond, the more ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

I condemn the NAACP. The NAACP’s move to condemn the tea party movement as racist is a scurrilous attack by a group that itself is unambiguously guilty of same. I have spoken at tea party rallies and am in contact with tea party members from across the country, and never have I heard even a whisper of that which we are falsely accused. The NAACP has a selectively myopic view and short-term memory when it comes to actual instances of what can only be construed as racial bias. A bond is debt issued by a federal, state or local government agency or a private company. When you buy a bond, you effectively loan money to the bond issuer, and the issuer promises to repay it with interest over the term of the loan. At the end of the term, you get your principal back. What’s the difference between a bond and a note? The only real difference is the term to maturity. Both bonds and notes are debt instruments that generally pay interest every six months. A note generally matures in 2 to 7 years (or sometimes 10), while bonds take longer to mature -- generally from 7 or 10 years to 30 or more. Why are bonds ...
