The paragraphs below come courtesy of Mark Mobius, emerging markets guru and executive chairman of Templeton Asset Management. I’m sure a number of you have been keenly following the World Cup matches as they play out across South Africa. For me, even though I was sitting far away, the opening match in the awe-inspiring Johannesburg venue felt especially close to home, since we have an office in this city originally called the “Place of Gold” We have been coming to South Africa for several years, and we also have a number of South African companies in our portfolios, so we rejoice along with the South Africans that they are ...

Southeast Asia, which comprises mainly of the 10 member countries in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and a few others, is an often overlooked region in Asia, as a result of being overshadowed by the Asian giants, China and India. The GDP of Southeast Asia is about the same size as India, and within two decades, it is expected that the region will have a larger and younger population than Europe. It is also a major exporter of soft commodities like palm oil, rice, tapioca, coconut oil, and rubber. Vietnam is one of the key frontier markets in Southeast Asia that I like and our experience with Vietnam goes back as ... market research, surveys and trends

Emerging markets » Investment Postcards from Cape Town
Today I was thinking about tightening cycles in emerging markets, and more specifically about those in China. Because let’s face it, China matters. China matters to the rest of Asia via competition for export income. China matters to Europe via competition for jobs. China matters to Brazil via domestic production via imports. China matters. The inflation pressures are building in key emerging economies, especially in the BIICs (Brazil, India, Indonesia, and China) – see this previous post regarding my new acronym, and this article at the Curious Capitalist (curiously posted just shortly after my post), which leaves ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Political Risk Report » oil
A new U.S. Geological Survey report estimates that Venezuela’s Orinoco Oil Belt holds nearly twice as much recoverable oil as Saudi Arabia’s proven reserves.  The USGS team came up with a range of “technically recoverable” oil estimates in the Orinoco belt from 380 billion to 652 billion barrels — and determined a mean estimate of 513 billion barrels. Is this estimate overly optimistic? It depends on whom you ask and which variable one uses to project what is actually economically recoverable. Quoting Gustuvo Coronel, an energy consultant and former PDVSA (Venezuela’s state oil company) board member: “I ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
What do you think is the most innovative investment fund product ...
You have some assumptions in your questions that I would like to address first. You want something new and different (innovative), you want high return and you want high customer satisfaction. In the investment world, everything has trade-offs. As my Daddy used to say, if it sounds too good to be true, it almost always is. To get high returns you take high risks. If you get lucky and it works out in the short run, then customers are happy (it's never volatile on the way up). However, eventually there will be a price to be paid. I have been in the business 24 years now, with high client satisfaction. How we do it, is to ...
Do you have faith in Mr. Bernanke regarding the fate of the ...
Please do get me wrong, I too like many of you believe that Bernanke is a superb economist. I also believe that his first responsibility is to bring confidence to market, controlling inflation is not the only mandate he has, although very important. Financial crisis need quick and decisive handling and are very different from theorizing about the inflationary targets. In light of recent sub-prime turmoils and debacle in markets across the world, I would like to see a swift and calm action like what ECB did yesterday. Lagging reactionary moves on part of FOMC is damaging to the market. That is why I miss Greenspan and his ...
