Economic conditions continue to have a major impact on the global private equity industry. While the recession was slower to hit emerging markets (EM), PE fundraising in these countries also experienced a sharp decline. According to recent data from the Emerging Market Private Equity Association (EMPEA), total fundraising in these countries declined 66 percent last year compared to 2008. Indeed, 196 PE funds raised $22.6bn in 2009, against $66.5bn raised by 210 funds in 2008. However, the EMPEA observes that the decline in new fund commitments was on par with the 65 percent decline in fundraising in developed markets last year. ...
