Hedge funds took a bath in 2008. But some low-cost mutual funds that use hedging techniques turned in respectable performances. None of the funds, which promise to limit losses during severe bear markets, made money, but most did better than Standard & Poor's 500-stock index, which surrendered 37%. These funds all try to make money in bear markets by betting that stocks will fall. That means shorting stocks -- selling borrowed shares in hopes of buying them back later at a lower price -- or investing in options and futures that pay off when stocks decline. We looked at 16 no-load funds in this category that have been around ...

Toxic Environmental Regulations Poison the Job Market | AMERICA ...
Continuing high unemployment is the biggest worry for most Americans. The percentage of working-age people in the labor force last month fell to 64.7 percent— the lowest figure in a quarter century . You would think that the administration’s top priority, then, would be to foster a pro-investment, pro-hiring business atmosphere. You’d certainly not expect them to pursue policies that could push any impending recovery, fragile at best , over the “tipping point” and down into another economic chasm . That, however, appears to be just what they’re doing. The administration’s entire agenda—from “stimulus” spending, to government-run ... market research, surveys and trends

Looks Like a Hedge Fund, Smells Like...
Herd mentality has always been a powerful force in investing circles, and with billions of dollars now running to hedge funds, many clients might feel tempted to join the stampede. The fact remains, however, that hedge funds are not right for every investor — or even for most investors. Despite the industry's efforts to democratize hedge funds, most still require steep minimum investments. Further, with hundreds of new hedge funds opening every year, many rely on untested managers. Academic studies have concluded that the flood of novices already is contributing to a serious problem for hedge funds — namely, a ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Glaxo nervous ahead of Avandia meeting, but FTSE rises for fourth day
Next week US regulators will examine a mass of clinical data to determine whether use of the drug increases the risk of heart attacks and if it does, what action should be taken. The worst outcome for the company would see Avandia withdrawn from the American market entirely, although less drastic options include restricting its use or beefing up warning labels. Today the European Medicines Agency put more pressure on Glaxo by announcing it would conduct its own review into the risks and benefits associated with Avandia. All this initially sent Glaxo's shares as low as £11.16. But they ended unchanged at £11.42 after ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Can anyone explain to me, in layperson's terms, what a hedge fund is?
The first hedge fund was created by A.W. Jones in 1949 and had a strategy that today would be termed "equity market-neutral"; the fund bought stocks it expected to outperform and shorted stocks it expected to underperform.  In other words, the fund hedged away its market risk (hence, the term "hedge fund").  The fund was structured as a limited partnership, was available only to accredited investors (high net worth individuals and institutions), and was compensated strictly through performance fees (20% of total return delivered to investors). Over time, other funds developed other strategies (many of which actually do ...

Well taking about the US, I will say very saturated market. I will not bank on retail or industrials; probably will see some upside in banking. I totally endorse anbody's viewpoint when he says that markets are more or less valued fairly with little upside potential left. You have to be stock specific and very active in such a scenario. Stay in cash, we will possibly find some buying opportunites on the later half of this year. Talking about emerging economies, especially India, I am optimistic on education, facilities management and security & surveillance market. There is going to be a lot of focus on social ...
