In its simplest form, a credit default swap is a bilateral contract between the buyer and seller of protection. The CDS will refer to a specified bond obligation of a “reference entity”, usually a corporation or government. The reference entity is not a party to the contract. The protection buyer makes quarterly premium payments—the “spread”—to the protection seller. If the reference entity defaults, the protection seller pays the buyer the par value of the bond in exchange for physical delivery of the bond, although settlement may also be by cash or auction. 1 2 A default is referred to as a " credit event " and ...
Carl Icahn's Next Move in the Lion's Gate Takeover Saga - DailyFinance
in late March, I anticipated that the canny corporate raider would hike his bid -- then $6 a share -- to clinch the deal. He did up the ante to $7, but he has yet to win management's acceptance. Would raising his bid again make sense and finally convince Lions Gate's board to see it Icahn's way? For sure, Icahn is looking at all angles of the quagmire he's in, but he certainly has been patient in trying to bag his quarry. After all, he's been in the stock for more than four-and-a-half years. During that period, the share price had tumbled, from $12 to $4.85 several months ago. Since making his bid, ... market research, surveys and trends
The May Hoboken Condo Sales Results | Hoboken Real Estate News
I don’t think this one will be resolved any time soon but here are the May sales results.   List price is down, average sales price is down, median sales price is down, but both average and median price per square foot is up. Sales volume is better than it’s been in the past but nowhere near where it would need to be to soak up all the inventory on hand.  To me, that is the critical figure – there are simply too many properties for sale in the Hoboken market. My question to the nay-sayers, however, is this:  if real estate is going to crash and burn, where do you invest?  The stock market is down, interest ... market research, surveys and trends

The details on Obama's just-released energy plan | Grist
Our nation is confronted by two major energy challenges -- global climate change and our dependence on foreign oil -- both of which stem from our current dependence on fossil fuels for energy. America's 20 million-barrel-a-day oil habit costs our economy $1.4 billion a day, and nearly $500 billion in 2006 alone. Every single hour we spend $41 million on foreign oil. America's oil consumption increased by over 20 percent between 1992 and 2005. Our energy-related carbon dioxide emissions increased by more than 15 percent between 1993 and 2005. Global warming is real, is happening now and is the result of human ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

PartnerRe Upgraded To Neutral
Although the current economic turmoil has dampened growth and the operating leverage of organizations across the reinsurance industry, we believe that once the economy rebounds, it will also elevate the earnings power of the company. Despite ongoing challenges at the global economic front, PartnerRe continues to experience a healthy growth trend in premiums earned, benefiting from the consolidation in the global life reinsurance market. Although the strengthening of U.S. dollar could moderate growth in the upcoming quarters, we believe the company is well positioned to attain superior growth from diversified opportunities once ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

JS-172: Fact Sheet: Cash Balance Plans
The American ideal is that everyone should retire with dignity and with the financial security to live out their years in comfort.  That ideal depends on a sound pension plan and adequate private savings, complemented by Social Security.  The American workforce has changed dramatically in recent years. No longer do workers spend their entire career at one company.  Traditional employer-based retirement plans provide the majority of benefits to employees only after they have worked with that employer for many years. This was a good deal for workers when they tended to stay with a single employer for long periods of ... technology research, surveys study and trend statistics

How well does the Canon PowerShot A470 7MP take pictures at night?
You don't need to pay a lot to get a pretty good digital camera. Solid budget models are becoming less expensive and offering better performance every year. The Canon PowerShot A470 is one of the best examples of this trend. With a price tag less than $150, it produces surprisingly good pictures. It isn't the prettiest camera available and it doesn't have any flashy features, but for the price, it's hard to beat. Canon tries to give the A470 a much-needed injection of style by offering four color choices: gray, blue, red, and orange. Unfortunately, colorful accents can't hide the camera's chunky, ...
