Market Neutral Investing Books

Much of the recent growth in international stocks, commodities, and REITs is driven by the need to diversify portfolios. Unfortunately, this past downturn has shown that effective diversification cannot be achieved by just adding a few more assets. When markets decline, people sell everything because they need to raise cash to cover losses. In today's market, people are selling their art, their wine, and any other asset they can liquidate. The only way remaining to get a true market neutral investment is to hold a long-short position. The long position holds stocks that do better than the overall market and the short ...
Technically, the value of those results may be positive or negative. However, general usage tends focus only on potential harm that may arise from a future event, which may accrue either from incurring a cost (" downside risk ") or by failing to attain some benefit (" upside risk ").

TSX TrendWatch Weekly » Blog Archive » Top-Down vs Bottom-Up ...
I haven’t hidden the fact that I’m pretty much a top-down investor (with rare exceptions due to special events).  That bias shows in the way I use  relative trend analysis™ (RTA) data, and in how I write my updates here.  On the other hand, I’ve never said that bottom-up investing is crazy, and I know a number of successful investors that operate that way.  They have no trouble using the same data that I provide and use from the DATA & CHARTS workbook for their own approach. After giving these two “opposite” approaches some thought over the past week, I’ve tried to reason through ... market research, surveys and trends

A less conventional and more challenging approach is to make investments based not on these "micro events" affecting companies but on macro events.       Macro events are changes in global economies, typically brought about by shifts in government policy which impact interest rates which, in turn, affect all financial ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

But competing in an emerging fund category is challenging, and those wishing to succeed in the alternative mutual fund space will need to clear some hurdles whilst heeding the lessons of the past. Schwab Advisers Play Psychologist for Clients Burned Too Often
Pennock was in Schwab’s office in Englewood, Colorado, just outside of Denver, talking by phone with a retiree who moved his money to Schwab last year because he says he felt suckered by his old broker. While they spoke, Pennock kept an eye on his computer screen and saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average drop 250 points, bounce sideways, then go into free fall -- 300, 400, 900 points down. His client was watching the same thing on CNBC. “What’s going on, George?” the retiree asked. “Do you have any explanation for this?” Pennock didn’t. He was thinking he should end the call and contact clients who had pulled out of equities ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
