Gauging Volcker Rule Impact - Mergers & Acquisitions
If the latest version of financial reform becomes law as expected, banks would lose a lucrative but wildly unpredictable source of profits scaling back so-called alternative investments over the next several years. It's a bad time to curb what banks can invest in private equity and hedge funds in compliance with the Volcker Rule, observers say. Private investing earnings are rebounding after plummeting last year; banks need every scrap of income in a post-recession regulatory and economic environment toxic to profit growth. "My impression is that [alternative investing] is probably a higher return on dollars invested ... market research, surveys and trends

Wealthy Families Forgo Private Equity for Direct Investing
The 2008 financial crisis had several unexpected outcomes, but one of the surprising ones was an increased willingness by wealthy families to invest directly in private companies and forgo private equity funds. Direct investments are not going to replace private equity funds any time soon, if for no other reason than such investments are only for the very rich. Volcker Rule May Give Goldman, Citigroup Until 2022 to Comply
June 29 (Bloomberg) -- Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Citigroup Inc. are among U.S. banks that may have as long as a dozen years to cut stakes in in-house hedge funds and private- equity units under a regulatory revamp agreed to last week. Rules curbing banks’ investments in their own funds would take effect 15 months to two years after a law is passed, according to the bill. Banks would have two years to comply, with the potential for three one-year extensions after that. They could seek another five years for “illiquid” funds such as private equity or real estate, said Lawrence Kaplan, an attorney at Paul, ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
