2008 was a challenging year for the Asian real estate industry as a whole, but by the end of the year there was a broad market sentiment that 2009 would be the year to invest back into Asian real estate. The current argument is that the second half of 2009 will be the time for funds to re-enter Asian real estate investment as the re-pricing of assets, which has been underway since early 2008, will present attractive and viable investment opportunities. Furthermore, re-priced assets combined with strong underlying economic fundamentals (economic data indicates that growth in Asia still looks robust – Asia ex-Japan is expected to ...
The total value of an institution's investments is often referred to as the institution's endowment and is typically organized as a public charity , private foundation , or trust . Among the institutions that commonly manage an endowment are: academic institutions (e.g., colleges , universities , private schools ), cultural institutions (e.g., museums, libraries, theaters, hospitals) and religious establishments. An endowment may come with stipulations regarding its usage. In some circumstances an endowment may be required to be spent in a certain way or alternatively invested , with the principal to remain intact in ...
Changing Universities: The $23 Billion Question
Throughout this academic year, I have been arguing that while the state may have cut the UC’s total $20 billion budget by $600 million in the last two years, the university lost over $23 billion in its investment portfolio during the same time period. In fact, there has been a huge outcry over the reduction of state funds, but no one has questioned UC’s investment losses. It appears that people assume that since everyone lost money during the global fiscal meltdown, we cannot hold the university responsible for its investment decisions. However, a new study concerning the pension losses at six New England ... market research, surveys and trends
Dollar bonds sold by China real estate companies this year are the worst performers among Asian non-financial corporate debt denominated in the U.S. currency amid concern the nation’s property market is overheating . Investors are demanding greater yields to lend to China property firms, a sign they expect borrowers will have a harder time meeting debt payments amid a government clampdown down on lending. The amount of dollar bonds issued by China developers represents 45 percent of all corporate dollar debt sales in Asia outside Japan this year, Bloomberg data show. State pension plan lagging behind towns' individual plans
As the stock market rebounded from a 2008 collapse, Massachusetts' $44 billion pension fund failed for the second straight year to keep pace with the investment gains of smaller local retirement systems, according to a new report. The 52 local funds that independently invest a collective $11.7 billion generated a median return of 20.3 percent in 2009, according to the annual investment report released by the Public Employee Retirement Administration Commission. The much larger state Pension Reserve Investment Trust, or PRIT, overseen by a board chaired by state Treasurer Tim Cahill and a team of investment managers and ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Should Investment Managers Pay More Taxes?
Congress is about to increase investment managers' taxes on a customary form of profits-based compensation that has administratively been treated as capital gain. Private equity, hedge fund, real estate and venture capital partnerships would have to re-evaluate the way they compensate managers. A House vote is expected soon and passage is inevitable, but the lobbyists are still hard at work hoping to prevent the change. The lobbyists are howling that raising taxes on investment managers' profit shares will discourage investment. Oh, but private equity saved Dunkin' Donuts! This argument is a derivative of the old, ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

WASHINGTON - Federal authorities charged a prominent Texas businessman and three of his companies yesterday with carrying out a "massive, ongoing fraud" involving the sale of $8 billion in certificates of deposit, one of the largest alleged financial frauds in U.S. history.
