However, the future distributions and the appropriate discount rate can only be assumptions. For the last 25 years, Warren Buffett has taken the value investing concept even further with a focus on "finding an outstanding company at a sensible price" rather than generic companies at a bargain price.
Socially Responsible Investment and an Improving Market
(aff.). Thanks to her generosity, I had a chance to read her newest book last week. She is the author of three Dummies series books, and of multiple articles in high-profile publications. It’s truly an honor to be hosting her on the blog today. First, a few words about Ann’s book. I honestly did not know what to expect when I heard about the concept of socially responsible investing, but I was pleasantly surprised. It doesn’t hurt that I like the Dummies series in general, because these books are great overviews/introductions to almost any topic imaginable. Socially Responsible Investing and Corporate Sustainability
The Social Investment Organization defines socially responsible investing (SRI) as “the integration of social responsibility and environmental sustainability with investment. It includes all the financial decision-making processes that are a part of a prudent investment management approach, but it also includes the selection and management of investments based on issues of sustainability or social responsibility.” With roots stretching back hundreds of years to Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions, SRI evolved in the 20th century and into the 21st by ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Way back in the 1980s, when Doug Flutie was the star quarterback for Boston College, I saw a dog wearing a maroon and gold sweater with the words Dog Flutie on it. But at the same time you can see why adults who run programs that involve young people pull their hair out after the moves of certain consumer product companies. Socially Sensitive Stupidity
In our role as financial advisors (financial actualizers?) some of the greatest value we can deliver is helping clients to truly make a material and meaningful difference in the social issues they personally value. Such social issues are often deeply personal and emotional, with clients having either extreme passion or outright disdain, depending on the issue.  Our role is not to judge what a client is passionate about, instead it is to help them truly understand how to accomplish and actualize that goal to make a meaningful difference. Take for example a client with $10 million in assets. He has extreme disdain for oil ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Republicans delay vote on unemployment extension
Right now, as we speak, Senate Republicans continue to file a bunch of motions that could delay the vote on extending unemployment benefits for as long as another day. ( Senate votes 60-40 to advance jobless benefits ) This is key: It's a reminder that Republicans intend to continue to try to block the extension, unless its costs are offset, for as long as possible. Nobody is focused on this, but Republicans actually see a political upside for themselves in this standoff. I'm told that Republicans are filing the motions because Senator Harry Reid says he doesn't want to allow votes on amendments that are designed ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

I wonder how can a listed company benefits from its share trading between shareholders. I mean if I am a shareholder and I sell all my shares to an interested buyer, I am the one who will receive the money from the sales, not the company. And the buyer will be the new shareholder, who owns my sold shares, not the company. So where did the company really benefit when shares are traded and bought in the market including increases in share prices due to speculation? I have no idea how the company will get the financial benefit when its shares are traded everyday between people who totally has nothing to do with the company's ...
