The following document is a response to ASUC President Will Smelko’s veto[1] of Senate Bill 118A, “A Bill in Support of ASUC Divestment from War Crimes.” SB 118A called on the UC Berkeley student government (the ASUC) and the University of California (UC) Regents to divest funds from companies enabling war crimes in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, among other places where war crimes take place. It was passed by the student senate in a 16 to 4 vote. President Smelko justified his veto with a number of misleading or mistaken claims. We discuss and rebut them in detail below, but generally speaking President Smelko’s ...

JustOneMinute: Why Obama's Columbia Years Went AWOL
What did Barack Obama do while at Columbia from 1981 to 1983 and in the year after his graduation?  That part of his life is scarcely mentioned in "Dreams From My Father"; the Wall Street Journal remarked in the mystery a month ago and the NY Times puzzled over it a year ago. Let me just toss out the outlines of a theory that has just hit my inbox and left me agog.  First, the usual disclaimers - this is speculative, there are gaps and leaps of logic, and nothing can be proven. However, that said... well, see if you are agog as well. 1.  From Dreams From My Father and other sources we know that Obama was ... market research, surveys and trends
Divestment spreads to University of Wisconsin, Georgetown, Brown ...
...When divestment is called for, it is often shunned immediately, yet this time around in Berkeley, in the aftermath of the brutal Operation Cast Lead, the political tide has shifted. The debate, at least among liberals, has moved from “If you’re for divestment, you’re anti-Israel or anti-Semitic” to “There may be other, more effective ways as a liberal peace activist to oppose Israel’s human rights violations than divestment.” This is a huge — let me repeat, huge — step in the right direction. ...Divestment isn’t anti-Semitic because it has absolutely nothing to do ... market research, surveys and trends

Notion of divestiture has changed in last few decades
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is facing increasing opposition, including calls for sanctions. States, such as Pennsylvania, are dropping any stock from companies that do significant business in Iran and Sudan. I was taken back to my Penn State student days as I watched the World Cup and heard commentators discuss the host country’s end to apartheid. South Africa was a constant topic of conversation when I neared my senior year because of the huge push for divestment. Students pressured administrators to drop from the school’s investment portfolio any company that did business with South Africa. Tensions were ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Appeal to Presbyterians on Israel: "First, Do No Harm"
American Jews do not regularly weigh in on deliberations of the Presbyterian Church (USA). However, a diverse spectrum of your mainstream partners has expressed hope that the church's stance on the Arab-Israeli conflict will embody nuance and sensitivity. Disagreements on weighty issues are legitimate and natural. Israelis themselves engage in vigorous debate and recognize that their country, experiencing difficult circumstances, is imperfect, as all nations are. Israel is not immune to shortcoming, or to fair criticism. I have been saddened, however, to find that several of the reports and proposals before you fail to meet ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

UA approves resolution calling for South African divestment - The Tech
The Undergraduate Association (UA) Council called for total divestment of MIT's holdings in companies operating in South Africa in a resolution it approved Dec. 5. "It's not common for the UA to take a stand on such an issue," said UA President Bryan R. Moser '87, who supported the proposal. "This issue is of national ... verdemilon-ga, You're in luck. A cancelled meeting this evening left me with more time available than I thought I would have, so here's your list of the many Electrolux comings and goings in what certainly seems was a tough decade for the company. As I mentioned earlier, I can't post the full articles, nor can I post links to the articles, since these are from subscription databases. However, I've provided the most relevant excerpts from 1991-1999, just as I did for the year 1990, above. Bear in mind that some articles are very brief news items -- only a sentence or two in some cases -- ...
