Nilus Mattive writes: More than a year ago — when the S&P 500 had begun to wobble but still sat comfortably near 1,400 — I wrote a column right here in Money and Markets talking about dollar-cost averaging. I said that the strategy “puts time on your side, and allows you to kick back and relax a lot more in the process.” I went ahead to say that “it’s a great way to deal with the kind of bumpy markets we’re seeing right now.” And I showed how — even during the throes of the Great Depression — dollar-cost averaging into the Dow could have produced a ...
world derivatives market has been estimated at about $791 trillion face or nominal value, 11 times the size of the entire world economy. The value of the derivatives market, because it is stated in terms of notional values , cannot be directly compared to a stock or a fixed income security, which traditionally refers to an actual value . Moreover, the vast majority of derivatives 'cancel' each other out (i.e., a derivative 'bet' on an event occurring is offset by a comparable derivative 'bet' on the event not occurring). Many such relatively illiquid securities are valued as marked to model , rather ...
Stock Market Investment Strategy - stock market
Because investing is not a sure thing in most cases, it is much like a game - you do not know the outcome until the game has been played and a winner has been declared. Anytime you play almost any type of game, you have a strategy. Investing isn't any different - you need an investment strategy. An investment strategy is basically a plan for investing your money in various types of investments that will help you meet your financial goals in a specific amount of time. Each type of investment contains individual investments that you must choose from. A clothing store sells clothes - but those clothes consist of shirts, pants, ... market research, surveys and trends
How to Invest Money in the Stock Market – A Basic Investment Guide
When you want to know how to invest money in the stock market you need to learn the stock market basics. It’s best to open a brokerage account ahead of time and learn how to place the order long before you begin to think of your stock portfolio. Knowing how to trade ahead of time takes the pressure off the trade itself and puts your focus on the matter at hand, the purchase of the stock and the investing strategies. Mutual Funds - High-Yield (High-Fee) Dow Trusts -
One very simple stock market investment strategy is to buy the 10 highest-yielding stocks in the 30-stock Dow Jones industrial average, and then sit back and enjoy the results. In the last 20 years, investors would have earned an average annual total return of 15.3 percent, compared with 10.8 percent for the entire Dow average. New packages of blue-chip stocks that follow this strategy are resounding hits. Dean Witter has raised $80 million with its products since January; and a clone created by Merrill Lynch, which is also sold by Prudential Securities, has raised $50 million since May. Profitability of return and volume-based investment strategies in ...
In this paper, we examine the profitability of intermediate- and long-horizon relative strength strategies (buying past winners and selling past losers) over the July 1994–December 2000 interval in China's stock market. We find a negative average return to relative strength strategy over a horizon of 6 months to 2 years. We also document that firm size, book-to-market, and beta effects are qualitatively similar to those in the US and other markets, that is, small stocks outperform large stocks, value stocks outperform growth stocks, and betas do not appear to be associated with average stock returns. Further, we show ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Bear Markets Are Your Friend: Embrace Them
Many investors live in fear of severe drops in the stock market. They mistakenly believe that to be a successful investor, they must be out of the market when it drops. The stock market sell off that began in September 2008 sent many investors running for the sidelines in order to be in cash instead of incurring more losses. Some believed they made the right decision as the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dipped below 7,000 in March 2009. But just like every other bear market in history, this market recovered much sooner and stronger than anyone expected. Those that sold their stocks while they were falling have now lost ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
The Midterms Could Spark a Stock Rally
President Barack Obama has already presided over the biggest stock-market rally during the start of a Presidency since Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930s. Now, if election year history is any guide, stocks are poised for further gains, though for reasons Obama probably wouldn't like. Should Democratics fare poorly in this fall's midterm elections and lose control of the House to Republicans, stock investors could view the resulting split government as a positive. "Markets love gridlock," says Ken Fisher, who oversees $35 billion in Woodside, Calif., as chief executive officer of Fisher Investments.
