stock market sentiment special research report Photo by
Despite a 40% market recovery and an abatement of the credit crisis, a climate of high fear abounds among market participants. Investor sentiment polls continue to show an excess of bears over bulls as few believe that a recovery can be sustained. If anything, fear has been increasing the last few weeks as the stock market has stalled out in a lateral trading range. While the benchmark S&P 500 Index has come up significantly from its March low, the cumulative AAII investor sentiment index continues to make lower lows as investor psychology continues to divergence against the market’s interim recovery. Investors it seems ...

Are you watching the VIX? Tuesday the VIX gapped open up, and the market gapped down on news from China. It highed Thursday intra-day at the early June high and reversed. Friday it gapped lower and closed near the low on the Day. Note: the S&P 500 hit new lows on the year, but the VIX did move to highs on the year. Stock Market Rydex Bull Bear Investor Sentiment Ratio :: The ...
Every week I present the following chart in our sentiment round up. See figure 1. It is the Rydex total bull to bear ratio. The indicator in the lower panel of figure 1 measures all the assets in the Rydex bullish oriented equity funds divided by the sum of assets in the bullish oriented equity funds plus the assets in the bearish oriented equity funds. When the indicator is green, the value is low and there is fear in the market; this is where market bottoms are forged. When the indicator is red, there is complacency in the market. There are too many bulls and this is when market advances stall. Figure 1. Rydex Total Bull/ Bear ... market research, surveys and trends

Sentiment Overview: Week Of June 11th, 2010
The weekly sentiment survey from AAII shows little change from last week: 34.5% of respondents identified as bullish, believing the stock market would be higher in 6 months while 43% believed it would be lower. The tilt towards pessimism (a light increase in bears combined with a slight decrease in bulls) pushed the bull ratio to 44%. Since it is neither low (30% or lower) nor high (60% or higher) it doesn’t really provide much edge. The lowest level for the bull ratio was 37% two weeks ago in late May. That was lower than the corresponding bull ratio at the bottom of the February correction but still not at an extreme. ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Saudi Gazette - Value of Saudi shares up 23.49% in January
JEDDAH - Although Saudi stock market closed in the negative territory on Monday, the January performance nonetheless showed a marked improvement. The total value of shares traded for the month reached SR65.65 billion ($17.51 billion), an increase of 23.49 percent over the previous month, Tadawul said on its website. Favorable corporate results, positive economic forecasts and steadying oil prices invigorated Gulf stock market sentiment on Monday, though the Saudi bourse declined as oil prices seesawed. Kuwait and Oman bourses also closed in the red. The rest registered gains. Saudi Arabia’s Tadawul All Share Index (TASI) dropped ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Investors Intelligence Stock Market Sentiment Indicator, Be Careful What You ...
under "the be careful what you wish for" column. The article highlights market sentiment data from Investors Intelligence, and for the first time since March, 2009, there are more bearish newsletter writers than bullish ones. While the article wishes this was a good thing, the entirety of the data series would suggest that it is not so simple. Figure 1 is a weekly chart of the S&P500 with the Investors Intelligence data in the lower panel. The green line is the bullish percentage and the red line is for the bears. As the article suggests there are now more bears than bulls and of course, this is just another reason why the stock ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Consumer Confidence, Stocks Plummet
We are in what one of my co-workers calls a perfect negative loop, where anemic jobs numbers feed bearish stock market sentiment which loops back and drives consumer confidence lower. The Conference Board provided the latest loop in the chain on Tuesday with the new report on Consumer Confidence numbers for June, which were down to 52.9, a dramatic drop from 62.7 in May. This comes on the heels of a major selloff in world markets overnight, and a Wednesday morning selloff in U.S. stocks that took the Dow below 10,000.  As all this unfolded Tuesday morning, President Obama was meeting with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

What is quadruple witching and how is it effecting US equities?
Heavy trading is expected as stock index futures, stock index options, stock options and single stock futures expire concurrently. Investors were trading shares at unusually high volume even without much in the way of major economic data or corporate earnings reports due Friday. The Dow Jones industrial average surpassed the 30-day trailing average volume within the first two hours of the session. This was not surprising considering it is a day known as quadruple witching, which signifies the concurrent expiration of stock index futures, stock index options, stock options and single stock futures. The major indexes moved higher ...
