The Buy and Hold Apocalypse

Over the next few years, a wave of commercial real estate loan failures could threaten America’s already-weakened financial system. The Congressional Oversight Panel is deeply concerned that commercial loan losses could jeopardize the stability of many banks, particularly the nation’s mid-size and smaller banks, and that as the damage spreads beyond individual banks that it will contribute to prolonged weakness throughout the economy. Between 2010 and 2014, about $1.4 trillion in commercial real estate loans will reach the end of their terms. Nearly half are at present “underwater” – that is, the ...
More so than most, Rogue considers her powers a curse: she involuntarily absorbs the memories, physical strength, and (in the case of superpowered persons) the abilities of anyone she touches. This potentially fatal power prevents her from making any physical contact with others, including her longtime on-off love interest, Gambit . Hailing from Caldecott, Mississippi (a fictional county), Rogue is the X-Men's self-described southern belle . A runaway , she was adopted by Mystique of the Brotherhood of Mutants and grew up as a villain. After Rogue permanently absorbed Ms. Marvel 's psyche and Kree powers, she reformed ...

Here's “Gold Shilling Buffoon” Glenn Beck Referring to Brian ...
Don’t watch Glenn Beck – of all the right wing radio radicals, he’s by far the one we can’t stomach 10 seconds of – so we’re not entirely sure what’s up with this “skit.” Apparently a site created a list of the “blackest white folks,” and Beck made the list (not sure why). Chicago Bears LB Brian Urlacher is on the list, too (again, not sure why), and this appears to be Beck’s best shot of poking fun at the list. It’s Friiiiiiiiday ! [ Bear Goggles On ] Did Beck somehow work in a reference to Van Jones? Don’t watch Glenn Beck – of all the right wing ... market research, surveys and trends

The Buy and Hold Apocalypse - No Moss on a Rolling Return
The "buy and hold" approach has received the harshest attacks recently from investors preoccupied by skewed data which suggests that in recent history buy-and-hold candidates have caused investors ruin. These critics love to pull out all sorts of statistics proving that investors who invested at the height of the market at various points in history took exceedingly long periods of time to break even again. Much of this silliness is calculated off the cuff using straight index values for the Dow Jones Industrial Average or S&P 500 -- a process we know is flawed because indices do not measure total return -- they just ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Apocalypse Fatigue: Losing the Public on Climate Change by Ted ...
Last month, the Pew Research Center released its latest poll of public attitudes on global warming. On its face, the news was not good: Belief that global warming is occurring had declined from 71 percent in April of 2008 to 56 percent in October — an astonishing drop in just 18 months. The belief that global warming is human-caused declined from 47 percent to 36 percent. While some pollsters questioned these numbers, the Pew statistics are consistent with the findings by Gallup in March that public concern about global warming had declined, that the number of Americans who believed that news about global warming was exaggerated ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

“Blood Ties/Crush/Happy Anniversary/The Thin Dead Line”
s, my wife turned me and said, “When is Spike just going to declare his love for Buffy already? That’s what I’m waiting for.” As it turns out, she didn’t have to wait long. By the end of “Crush,” Spike has declared himself over and over, via words (“It’s not so unusual. Two people. In the workplace. Feelings develop.”), via deeds (by turning the tables on a visiting Drusilla and offering to kill her on Buffy’s behalf), and via a creepy shrine that turns Buffy off more than it wins her over. Total Recall Or Total Bull? Some Perspective On The iPhone 4 Antenna Frenzy
about the iPhone 4 antenna issue, you’d think it was the first sign of the apocalypse or something. It’s one thing for tech blogs to talk ourselves in circles about an issue, it’s another when the mainstream media starts leaning on the story in a major way. I mean, this was Keith Olbermann’s number one item on Countdown last night . And local broadcasts across the country are devoting time to it. I mean, the random people sitting next to me in the cafe are taking about it right now for chrissakes. It has become coffee house conversation. Seriously. It’s time to take a step back and get some ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

A “Queen of Hearts” trial of organ markets: why Scheper‐Hughes's objections to markets in human organs fail Correspondence to: J S Taylor Department of Philosophy, The College of New Jersey, 2000 Pennington Road, PO Box 7718, Ewing, NJ 08628‐0718, USA; jtaylor@tcnj.edu Nancy Scheper‐Hughes is one of the most prominent critics of markets in human organs. Help me survive the coming apocalypse! | Ask MetaFilter
I'd like to learn a wide set of survival skills (how to make water potable, first aid, self defense, scrounging/farming food, making clothes and shelter, etc.) that will help me and my loved ones escape Manhattan in a crisis situation, and then survive in the Thunderdome world that lies beyond. Any program that incorporates swimming skills, weapons training, and so forth would be a huge plus as well (or any recommendations for practical weapons training, or swimming lessons for adults, would also be appreciated). I'm also up for programs outside of NYC (but still ideally in the general vicinity), provided that ...
Isn't the media making the economic crisis worse? - Yahoo! Answers
It seems like everytime I turn on the TV or check my e-mail, the media keeps throwing out some report that, in essence, says "Our economy is virtually doomed... Seriously, we're screwed." It seems like the media and newscasters are being so dramatic and playing it up so much that they are making it out to be far worse than it actually is, which is causing people to panic and sell all their stocks. While I don't claim to be an expert on the economy, I think the economy would start doing better if the media would quit frightening people into thinking that we are on the verge of financial apocalypse. How do you ...
