Two classic books are Burton Malkiel’s A Random Walk Down Wall Street and Charles Ellis’s Winning the Loser’s Game , but for someone who just wants the basics, without a lot of graphs and unfamiliar terms, neither title would be my first choice. Fortunately, these two authors have teamed up to write a quick-and-dirty primer on smart investing that any newbie can read in a couple of well-spent hours. The Elements of Investing (Wiley) packs a lot of wisdom into its 130 little pages. It begins by explaining some cardinal rules ...

Investing Guy: Book Review: A Random Walk Down Wall Street
(and many others), this is the single best investing book ever written.  Malkiel covers a wide array of topics including stock valuation theories, bubbles, technical and fundamental analysis (even explicitly covering individual technical strategies and debunking the conclusions of repeated outperformance), modern portfolio theory, behavioral finance (a particularly interesting topic in my mind), efficient-market theory, and then a guide to come up with a portfolio that will challenge those on Wall Street.  Before creating a portfolio for the first time, get this book. There are certainly easier texts to read for ... market research, surveys and trends

Political fights over clean coal get dirty and expensive
FORTUNE -- The politics of clean coal keep preventing the United States government from actually finishing a clean coal project. Last week, the Department of Energy added a new twist to the on-again-off-again clean coal project FutureGen, and it probably didn't have much to do with technology. "Being the flagship DOE project tends to slow things down considerably because politics tend to get in the way," says John Thompson, the director of the Coal Transition Project at the Clean Air Task Force, a non-profit working on clean coal programs. Opposition broadband plan lacks leadership and vision: Budde
A leading telecommunications analyst has slammed the Federal Opposition's broadband policy announced today as lacking vision and leadership. Buddecom director, Paul Budde, said the Liberal’s plan to scrap the fibre-to-the-premises National Broadband Network (NBN) in favour of investing in backhaul, upgrading existing telephone exchanges and rolling out wireless networks, would leave Australia at the bottom of the international telecommunications heap. “My major complaint is it lacks a vision, it lacks a strategic national plan,” Budde said. “It’s a bit of everything – a bit here and a bit there.
