This traditional model of human rights obligations has in recent years come under increased pressure from a changing, globalizing world. Greater attention is now being paid to the role and responsibilities of non-state actors, such as individuals and corporations, vis-a-vis human rights. ...
The Equator Principles (EPs) are a voluntary set of standards for determining, assessing and managing social and environmental risk in project financing. Project financing, a method of funding in which the lender looks primarily to the revenues generated by a single project both as the source of repayment and as security for the exposure, plays an important role in financing development throughout the world (See http://www.bis.org/publ/bcbs118.pdf ). East Africa Forum » Ethiopia dam blot on China's aid record
The tale of two dams in Africa – one under construction, the other completed – captures two starkly differing sides to China’s image as a major player in the development of hydropower around the world. The Gibe 3 Dam in Ethiopia, now under construction by Italian hydropower developer Salini Costruttori, is the target of international lobbyists opposed to what they say is the devastating environmental consequences it will have. Funding to cover the full US$1.75 billion construction of the project has not yet been secured, and against a background of opposition from local and international lobbyists, both the ... market research, surveys and trends

Today in London, the Equator Banks – a group of about 40 financial institutions that together represent more than 80 percent of global project financing – pledged to strengthen their environmental and social risk management. The Equator is one of the Latitudes or imaginary circles drawn around the Polar Axis which, together with the lines of Longitude, form a grid on which the land and seas are mapped in a fixed geographical and astronomical position.
