Three blind men approached a large animal and ventured three different opinions of what it was. The first one exclaimed, "It is a tree!" as he put his hands on the thick legs. The second insisted, "It is a snake!" as he grabbed the trunk. The third swore, "It is a bird!" as he felt the large ears. Each argued fervently that he was correct. Finally, a man who could see came upon the three arguing blind men and asked if he could help. They cried out, "We cannot agree on what that thing is over there." The passerby said "What thing, that elephant?" "Elephant!" screamed the ...

Macro Man: High Tide For The Financial Sector?
What Goldman taketh away, Goldman giveth. That appears to be the motto of the past few days, with Fraudulent Friday now a distant memory as the market basks in the warm glow of yet another solid quarter from the good ship GS. Obviously, the financial sector generally has been helped by favourable market conditions, which have boosted sellside trading revenues (if not, alas, the performance of your average macro directional punter.) And in fairness to GS, their effective tax rate of 33% was no doubt higher than that of many of their most strident critics. No more 1% tax rate bonanzas in this environment! total return investing: no decimals allowed!
I don’t invest, trade, gamble with a goal of 6-14% annualized returns.  You should know this when reading this blog…I’m aggressive beyond the normal parameters of “money management”.  You see… My goal is to MULTIPLY total assets.  I don’t separate into “portfolios”….to me, that rings hollow.  There is only one portfolio and that is the entire Swan portfolio as a whole. Each year, I’m attempting to multiply my net worth.  Multiply. As you can imagine, this type of approach requires great risks…and leads to large swings in both directions. For example, in 2008 ... market research, surveys and trends

Total Return Investing
A major issue in investment management is ensuring that a portfolio spans a lifetime - and, in many cases, beyond - while providing enough income to support a desired lifestyle. The key to this balancing act is finding the proper cash withdrawal or distribution rate to meet current income needs while ensuring that the assets maintain their purchasing power over the longer term. This can be achieved through investment strategies based on generating total returns from a combination of capital gains, dividends, and interest income. How do I get the highest return investing $500? - Yahoo! Answers
Yes that was a serious answer - it illustrates perfectly the risk/reward correlation. The higher the potential return, the higher the risk to get that return. You will first need to state your risk tolerance - how OK you are with loosing your investment. If you just can't stand to loose any of that money (a low risk tolerance), then the highest return potential for you would be with Series EE or I savings bonds which are paying about 2% interest right now. If you have a much higher risk tolerance, then you can look into investing in stocks and ETFs through a broker. You will want to learn about how the market works and ...

It's almost like planning a trip to a casino. Figure out ahead of time how much money you can piss away, and not be negatively effected.
