In a bid for higher returns amid a dismal stock market environment, some mutual fund companies are offering investors access to high-risk private-equity investments. Just last month, Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. of New York launched Opta, an exchange traded note platform with three ETNs — one of which tracks the S&P 500 Listed Private Equity Index, which comprises 30 global private-equity companies. A month before that, Red Rocks Capital Management and Alps Funds Services Inc., both of Denver, launched the Listed Private Equity Fund, an actively managed mutual fund that also invests in publicly traded ...

A Private Affair
With four businesses under his belt, two of which he sold for megamillions, 33-year-old Michael Lazerow qualifies as a serial entrepreneur. Therefore, he says, he's well positioned to invest in one of today's most coveted asset classes: private equity. It involves companies that seize other companies, spruce them up and (fingers crossed) sell them for a profit years later. The investment category regained its popularity in 2006 when there were more than 1,000 announced private equity deals in the U.S. "Most of the money is made in finding the right deal," says Lazerow, whose newest venture, Buddy Media, is a ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Ever since the First Data buyout by KKR, the BPO industry has been a target for large cap private equity funds across the United States.  The First Data deal was a $29 billion deal, and at the time, the company was largest publicly traded American electronic transaction processing company.  Fiserve has an enterprise value of over $13 billion, and about $750 million in EBITDA.  This gives an EV/EBITDA multiple of 17.0-18.0x, even higher the multiple paid for First Data. Silver Lake and Warburg Pincus also recently bought IDC, Interactive Data Corp., seeing revenue growth potential in the need for market transparency across ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

PETERS: Mad At Finishing Fourth In Nashville 200
Timothy Peters had been looking forward to his return to Nashville Superspeedway since the spring race in April. With some unfinished business to take care of, Peters was determined to play the guitar in Victory Lane. The #17 Red Horse Racing team unloaded Peters' favorite chassis and it looked to be the truck to beat after both practice sessions. Peters qualified third but wasted no time getting to the lead. By lap three, the No. 17 was at the front of the field. Leading until a green flag pit stop on lap 60, Peters reported that his truck was getting a little too loose. Unwilling to give up, he fought the loose condition ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Judge OKs class action lawsuit over "Windows Vista Capable" labeling
SEATTLE (AP) A federal judge said Friday that consumers may go ahead with a class action lawsuit against Microsoft Corp. over the way it advertised computers loaded with Windows XP as capable of running the Vista operating system. The lawsuit said Microsoft's labeling of some PCs as "Windows Vista Capable" was misleading because many of those computers were not powerful enough to run all of Vista's features, including the much-touted "Aero" user interface. I'm glad to see this tested legally. I personally know of a few painful cases where money and time were thrown away by consumers. Wow, what a waste of our ...
