knowledge management in engineering design special research report Photo by
The research interests of the Applied and Nano-optics group cover a wide range with an emphasis on experimental nanoscale optics. We are developing new methods and devices for optical studies of single particles such as molecules, photons, or nanomagnets. To this end we are using a wide variety of optical and nanoscale characterization techniques such as time-correlated single photon counting, ultrafast laser spectroscopy, or scanning probe microscopy. Applications of our research include integrated biomedical sensors, high-density magnetic memory, or single-photon light sources and detectors. [MORE] The Computer Communication ...
comprises a range of strategies and practices used in an organization to identify, create, represent, distribute, and enable adoption of insights and experiences . Such insights and experiences comprise knowledge , either embodied in individuals or embedded in organizational processes or practice. An established discipline since 1991 (see Nonaka 1991 ), KM includes courses taught in the fields of business administration , information systems , management , and library and information sciences . More recently, other fields have started contributing to KM research; these include information and media, computer science , public health

Computer Software Engineers and Computer Programmers
Computer software engineers are among the occupations projected to grow the fastest and add the most new jobs over the 2008-18 decade, resulting in excellent job prospects. Employment of computer programmers is expected to decline by 3 percent through 2018. Job prospects will be best for applicants with a bachelor's or higher degree and relevant experience. Computer software engineers design and develop software. They apply the theories and principles of computer science and mathematical analysis to create, test, and evaluate the software applications and systems that make computers work. The tasks performed by these ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Just How Risky Are Risky Businesses?
this week examines the work of scientists and statisticians who estimate the risk of catastrophic events befalling the nuclear industry and space-shuttle missions. Similar procedures might have helped BP and the deep-sea oil-drilling industry assess their chances of a massive oil spill. BP didn’t make a quantitative estimate of risk, instead seeing the chance of a spill as “low likelihood” bases on prior events in the gulf, spokesman Jon Pack said. “If you look at the history of drilling in the Gulf, and elsewhere, blowouts are very low-likelihood, but obviously it’s a high impact, and that’s ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

eventually this led to KBE being considered as the basis for generative design with many expectations for hands-off performance where there would be limited human involvement in the design process. For certain purposes, KBE can be thought of in terms of a set of models and operations related to specific applications. An example of this approach exists in the CATIA program through its Knowledgeware Workbench. KBE can have a wide scope that covers the full range of activities related to PLM and MDO . KBE's scope would include design, analysis ( computer-aided engineering " CAE), manufacturing , and support. In this ...
