This one has gnawed away at me since my wife and I married in the late eighties. I was of the mind that it was to pay for the BBC and at the time the BBC was head and shoulders above the ITV shite so I thought the fee was well worth it. However today the BBC puts out exactly the same shite programmes as ITV and the plethora of shitty channels that have come into being in the intervening years. If I were living alone I wouldn't have a television as it now serves no real purpose for me. The few programmes I would like to watch are all available on catch up services online. As it is I live with my family and there are a fair ...

“Creative” Wall Street and Money-Laundering | Emptywheel
I have long maintained that we will eventually learn that Citibank took over where BCCI and then Riggs Bank left off: serving as a money laundering vehicle used by drug cartels and other organized crime, terrorists, and spooks. But this article (h/t scribe) on the role of big banks in laundering Mexican drug money reports that–while Citibank has been implicated in money laundering (but took the appropriate regulatory steps in response)–there are a number of other banks deeply implicated: Wachovia (now owned by Wells Fargo) Bank of America American Express HSBC Banco Santander Most of these banks were implicated in ... market research, surveys and trends
DownWithTyranny!: Part of the vile DOMA is struck down in U.S. ...
"[T]his court is convinced that 'there exists no fairly conceivable set of facts that could ground a rational relationship' between DOMA and a legitimate government objective. DOMA, therefore, violates core constitutional principles of equal protection." by Ken As you've no doubt heard, Judge Tauro, who sits on the federal bench in the District of Massachusetts, delivered rulings in two cases in which he carved a serious chunk out of the dreadful -- and, as usual with right-wing legislative initiatives, grotesquely dishonestly named -- Defense of Marriage Act. In the two decisions the judge, a 1972 Nixon ... market research, surveys and trends

Looks like Fring made too many waves by updating its iPhone app to support two-way video chat. After a short time when iPhone 4 owners could use Fring to video chat with desktop PCs using Skype, Fring pulled all Skype support, at first temporarily, but now for good. Both sides of this relationship gone sour tell different stories. Fring says it was blocked by Skype in an “anti-competitive ambush.” Skype says that’s not true, but claims Fring violated terms of use for its API, and was damaging the Skype brand by temporarily pulling support. Guns legal or not in the UK? - Yahoo! Answers
I saw this article about a shooting in the Liverpool. When did the nanny state start allowing citizens to own guns? All I have heard about England is how they took the guns away and had some crime wave going on. I suppose I just don't follow news over there much. What are the laws over there and can you own a handgun? I just got a new Glock .357 model 31 =D Going to shoot it for the first time this weekend =P Gun ownership is legal in the UK but must be licensed. The most common are shotguns, which are common especially in rural locations. These require a shotgun certificate. The definition of a shotgun is quite rigid ...
Can alcohol be consumed in a moving RV? | Ask MetaFilter
I have looked and looked but I can not find any laws allowing alcohol, or disallowing alcohol to be drank in the back of of an RV in transit. To sum it up, i have a school bus registered as a personnal Recreational Vehicle (motor home), which some friends and I are going to take from Seattle to Michigan and back this summer. We are not clear if alcohol can be consumed in the back of a moving RV. The drivers will not be drinking, and we will by no means getting 'out of control' drunk. We just want to know if it's actually legal or not? Some people say yes. Some no. Some people tell me there has to be a wall diving ...
