Last week, to help out with the closing of the books, as we were behind, my supervisor asked me to stay late to make sure everything was posted.  I am an hourly employee, so I said: "Of course, I will get overtime, right, since I work 40 hours per week?" "No.  I need this done, so you will have to stay, and get it done, and I need you to stay without pay, so it looks good for us that we got it all done."  You know our jobs are on the line, bull crap, etc, etc. "But that is illegal ... if an hourly employee works more than 40 hours per week, or 8 in one day, the law says I must be paid OT." ...
designed to dissuade or prevent employers from forcing their employees to work excessively long hours. These laws may take into account other considerations than the humanitarian, such as increasing the overall level of employment in the economy. One common approach to regulating overtime is to require employers to pay workers at a higher hourly rate for overtime work. Companies may choose to pay workers higher overtime pay even if not obliged to do so by law, particularly if they believe that they face a backward bending supply curve of labour . Overtime pay rates can cause workers to work longer hours than they would at a flat ...

Half Sigma: Why a career in computer programming sucks
It’s temporary because the powers that be keep changing the languages and tools that programmers need to do their jobs. In nearly all other professions, knowledge capital increases as you grow older because you keep learning more about your field. But in computer programming, the old knowledge becomes completely obsolete and useless. No one cares if you know how to program in COBOL for example. It’s completely useless knowledge. Even though I haven’t been working in computer programming all that long, I have already seen most of the technologies that I first began working with become relegated to the garbage pile. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
California overtime calculation question: 8hrs and/or 40hrs ...
CA overtime law says an employee gets paid 1.5 x for hours worked over 8 hours per day and hours worked over 40hrs per week. My question is: If someone works 9 hours each day for 5 days, that means they have 5 hours OT. Am I supposed to pay 1.5x for the 5 hours he worked over 8hr/day AND another 1.5x for the 5hrs he worked over 40hr/week? Which means, rather than 40hrs of regular time + 5hrs of overtime, I'd be paying 35hrs regular and 10hrs overtime. I'm having an argument with the creators of the software suite I'm using to run operations, which includes a timeclock/payroll calculator. Pay ...
