The 2006 Pew Internet and American Life Project study notes that "Internet penetration has now reached 73% for all American adults" (Madden, p. 1). This marks an astounding growth. In the summer of 1995, Pew researchers found less than 15% of U.S. adults were online (p. 3). Because of its explosive growth and the types of activity that can occur online, many have likened the Internet to the 19th century U.S. Wild West: it forms an e-frontier of endless possibility, where communities form, cultures grow, and lawlessness flourishes. Not unlike the Wild West, groups with similar belief systems and interests find one ...
Many of the licenses, notably all the original licenses, grant certain "baseline rights", such as the right to distribute the copyrighted work without changes, at no charge. Some of the newer licenses do not grant these rights. , Creative Commons licenses are currently available in 52 different jurisdictions worldwide, with 9 others under development. One of the most hotly contested issues in the field of intellectual property law concerns the existence, or non-existence, of patent thickets and the extent to which any such bottlenecks may be interfering with research. For decades, scholars warned that problems related to the over proliferation of patent rights would interfere with innovation. In contrast, a growing body of commentary argues that patent thickets are not a problem in modern industries. Either patent thickets do not exist, or if they do, patent thickets do not interfere with the progress of research. The rhetoric is ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Saving Sakineh
This is a tragedy that belongs to modern powerplay and the current moment, and that calls for a much more thoughtful response from outside observers In the west, those tragedies occasionally flicker across our front pages or perform a brief morbid dance on our television screens. But it is difficult to understand how they infuse Iranian culture, politics, and every day life. The stoning of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 43 year old woman sentenced to death for allegedly committing adultery, is just one manifestation of the horror faced by Iranians who’ve fallen foul of the government. Her case is particularly heart rending, and ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Is there a way to attribute Creative Commons licensing in machine ...
I guess Creative commons is more of a license agreement but I hear more and more about rights agreements being embedded into things like RSS feeds, see Calacanis, so feed readers will be able to opt in or out of supporting rights holders request for types of re-publishing. Is there something like this for other protocols or distribution formats? Does Flickr have a way of tagging CC images other than at the database level? Is there a non restrictive DRM approach that podcasters can make use of in order to be recognised for their work when it appears through non original channels.  Discuss this question (0 comments) why ...
Slashdot | Does Legal Online Video Content Delivery Exist?
There's nothing wrong with using BitTorrent for distributing legal content. DRM was deliberately left out of the spec, because it would've made it horribly complicated and because it's much better to put the DRM in the payload being transferred rather than try to work it into the protocol.
