A common question is "why doesn't the repository FFmpeg convert to mp3, aac, mpeg4, etc?". Ubuntu doesn't make it very clear to the general user as to why to repo FFmpeg is so limited or how to fix this issue. This is reflected in the number of forum questions relating to this topic. Why is FFmpeg from the repository so limited? Legal reasons. Some software is limited due to geographical differences in software patents, legal restrictions on free speech, and restrictions on certain technologies. Ubuntu sidesteps these legal restrictions by not including some restricted packages by default. Users must install these ...
Sound data is grouped into frames of 256 samples. Each frame is converted into the frequency domain and the most significant (highest-amplitude) frequencies are identified. A number of frequency bands are selected for encoding; the rest are discarded. The bitstream for each frame then encodes which frequency bands are in use and what their amplitudes are. This codec does not take into consideration actual sample rate, and has fixed ratio between input samples amount and output packet size (2 bits per input sample).

Banshee and F-Spot to depend on Moonlight « Rahul Sundaram (mether ...
This makes things far far simplier. With f-spot and banshee out for good…and tomboy replaced…the mono stack becomes more isolated and less of a issue to try to squeeze into a desktop. -jef This is not correct. There will be an additional UI for banshee that will be written in moonlight. Nereid (the current UI) and Cubano (the “netbook” UI) aren’t going anywhere. If that is the case, it would be easy for Fedora to ignore the additional UI but I will wait for a confirmation from the developers involved in the project on how clear the separation is going to be. Majority of Proposed Funds are for Military Aircraft; House Appropriations Axes Human Rights Conditions to Speed Delivery The US House of Representatives is expected to vote this week on the 2009 Supplemental for Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Pandemic Flu, which would more than double the US government's fiscal year 2009 funding for Mexico's drug war.  The majority of the $470 million in this proposed round of Plan Mexico funds would pay for military aircraft, all of which can be armed.  The House Appropriations Committee has completely removed the paltry human rights conditions that have thus far been attached to ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

What's the best FREE web video recording software I can get ...
I'm facing a bit of trouble here...all I just wanted to do was to record some videos of my sessions in my online video games, so I tried getting some web recording software. I disregarded FRAPS because the only way it will record my videos well is if I pay for the full version. I tried using HyperCam, but after I recorded my videos, when I played it, the video appears to go super fast no matter WHAT FPS speed I set on it. Please, help me out greatly in this...the game is Rumble Fighter, BTW. I'm facing a bit of trouble here...all I just wanted to do was to record some videos of my sessions in my online video ...
Slashdot | Webcasting, Windows Media or Quicktime?
Honestly I am not sure you can create a broadcast using just Windows Media Player. You need Windows Media Encoder + Windows Server. On a related note. I briefly provided some support to a India-based site. Which provides video in Real, Quciktime & Windows Media. 75% choose to view in Windows Media. I'd go with MPEG-4, because it is fairly common, and is well-supported by open source compared to H.264 or other alternatives. WMP is not too bad, and it's interface may be better than Quicktime's, but locking to WMV is a sin. I use Media Player Classic on Windows to do all my video, but I hardly ever do streaming. On ...
