In most countries, they were quickly made illegal, as factory owners had far more political power than workers. Most western countries partially legalized striking in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. Strikes are sometimes used to put pressure on governments to change policies. Occasionally, strikes destabilise the rule of a particular political party. A notable example is the Gdańsk Shipyard strike led by Lech Wałęsa . This strike was significant in the struggle for political change in Poland , and was an important mobilised effort that contributed to the fall of the Iron Curtain .

Socialist Appeal - 1974: Workers kick out Tory government
The news is full of the plans of the Con-Dem coalition to hammer the public sector in the  interests of the ruling class. But “The best laid schemes o' mice an' men, gang aft agley,” as Robbie Burns wrote.      Ted Heath’s plans went very agley in the early 1970s, and he had a Tory parliamentary majority that Cameron can only dream of. The volatility of the world in 2010 means that this new government will be a government of crisis. The term "industrial relations" has developed both a broad and a narrow meaning. Originally, industrial relations was broadly defined to include the totality of relationships and interactions between employers and employees. From this perspective, industrial relations covers all aspects of the employment relationship, including human resource (or personnel) management, employee relations, and union-management (or labor) relations. Since the mid-twentieth century, however, the term has increasingly taken on a narrower, more restricted interpretation that largely equates it with unionized employment relationships. But 1972, when the events of Bloody Sunday occurred, was another planet. Those who were not yet born, be prepared to be amazed. This was a time when otherwise macho rock stars wore make-up and platform shoes; when the top British football teams comprised top-class Britons; when the Welsh were best at rugby, and the West Indies mighty at cricket; when the National Union of Mineworkers ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

What was the Wagner Act and why does it matter? - Yahoo! Answers
A. This law created three major new programs: Old Age Insurance, the Aid to Dependent Children Program, and Unemployment Insurance. Though the act did little to end the Great Depression, it did help prevent future economic crises by creating a social safety net that kept Americans from falling into dire poverty due to old age or unemployment. B. Also known as the Agricultural Adjustment Act, it attempted to raise commodity prices by getting farmers to reduce production. Its programs were so popular that they survived the Depression and remain the cornerstone of U.S. agricultural policy even today. Farm incomes rose back to ...
