Below are summary findings from the LexisNexis versus Westlaw survey that we conducted between April 25, 2008 and May 5, 2008.  The complete survey results are available as part of our Legal Research Paper Series . The first question asked participants to identify where they work by library type.  Forty-eight percent of respondents were from law firm libraries, thirty-one percent were from academic law libraries, and court, county and other libraries were represented by much smaller numbers.  The full breakdown for this question is seen in Figure 1.  For all respondents that worked in law firm libraries, the survey instrument ...

Thank you for affording me the opportunity to provide my views.  I hope the following recommendations and comments will assist you as your subcommittee deliberates on the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2011. Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board I remain deeply concerned that the Administration has not yet nominated anyone for the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, created by the 2004 Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, and reconstituted by the 2007 Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act.  The 9/11 Commission recognized that without ... market research, surveys and trends

in particular, section 215, also known as the library provision or business records provision.  Section 215 was extended another year until February 28, 2011.  This section allows FBI investigators to apply to the  FISA court for an order granting access to tangible items (including books, records, papers, and other documents) in foreign intelligence, international terrorism, and clandestine intelligence cases without much regard for fourth amendment restrictions on government search and seizure.  Under the PAtriot Act, investigators submit a statement of facts to the court to inform them that the request ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

plug-in.  After the presentation, one attendee stopped by and suggested that not enough librarians are using the plug-in because they just don’t know about it.  I must admit that the comment surprised me — so, I decided to do a quick survey. With the blessing of the folks at RECAP (CITP at Princeton), I created a super simple survey trying to see  if we (librarians) know about RECAP and if we do, do we use it and teach about it.  I created a survey on Zoomerang and sent the link to the following e-mail lists: LAW-LIB, NOCALL, and All-SIS, and also spread the word on Twitter. As of May 15th, here is what the we saw ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Caption: 23 states and the District of Columbia currently tax digital downloads, but critics say 11 lack explicit legal authorization. Graphic courtesy of the Sutherland Asbill & Brennan law firm. If there are two things state tax collectors seem to agree on, the first is that finding more money could really come in handy right now. The second is that taxing iTunes and other digital purchases might just do the trick. A new proposal in the U.S. Congress is, however, designed to curb many of these "iTaxes," which have popped up all over the country in the last three years. Currently, some 23 states and the District of ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
California Dems Endorse Pot Legalization, Proposition 19
Democratic lawmakers from California are hoping that a proposition to legalize marijuana on the November ballot will help drive progressive voter turnout, but most are so far unwilling to state publicly how they'll vote when the curtain closes. Three House Democrats, however, tell HuffPost that they'll be supporting the measure, which would authorize cities and counties to tax and regulate the sale of marijuana for adults 21 and over. Three may not seem like a high number, but it represents the most public support that legalization has garnered from a single state's delegation -- and it signals the effect that ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

How to Do Russian Legal Research – Law Library of Congress
The Constitution states that Russia shall be a democratic and federal state with a republican form of government based on the rule of law.  The people of Russia shall be the only source of power in the Russian Federation. The Constitution proclaims a broad array of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights that are guaranteed by the state.  Generally, these rights conform to the international standards as established by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, and the International Covenant on Human Rights of 1966.  when threatened;  Better to keep the mood passive but strong- I suggest you send a letter to the HR Dept. requesting an "ARBITRATION MEETING" instead of starting off with the words "LEGAL ACTION".   First, if others were dismissed, laid off etc, find out what their severance was to see if yours  was equitable for you; Determine if your termination was done within the legal guidelines for your State-every state has different employment laws ; such as warning not ices etc.-were you really wrongfully terminated, or are you just upset about the $$ you DIDN’T RECEIVE?! Arbitration is a better way to ...

Canadian copyright law is the area of law that defines copyright within Canada. As copyright is said to exist only in statute, most rights are derived from the Copyright Act. All powers to legislate copyright law are in the jurisdiction of the federal government by virtue of section 91(23) of the Constitution Act 1867. Originality The Act provides protection for all "original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic" works. Close attention has been paid to the use of the word "original". It has been well established that the foremost requirement for the subsistence of copyright is that the work be original. ...
