The Foreign and Investment Review Board (FIRB) has just released a new foreign investment policy, which sets out its approach when assessing foreign investment applications under the Foreign Acquisitions and Takeovers Act 1975. Among other things, the policy defines the term ‘foreign governments and their related entities’, and outlines the factors FIRB will take into account when considering if a proposed investment is contrary to Australia’s national interest. Meaning literally "merchant law", it evolved as a system of custom and best practice, which was enforced through a system of merchant courts along the main trade routes. It functioned as the international law of commerce. It emphasised contractual freedom, alienability of property, while shunning legal technicalities and deciding cases ex aequo et bono . A distinct feature was the reliance by merchants on a legal system developed and administered by them. States or local authorities seldom interfered, and surrendered some of the control over trade within their territory to the merchants. In return, trade flourished ...

You are generous to the community and classy. It is so enjoyable to feel welcome to sit and watch the sunset, have a drink or something to eat in beautiful outdoor surroundings without being an actual guest of the hotel. We have also enjoyed Sunday nights and dancing around the pool. The family that owns the Naples Beach Club has a big heart. They grow beautiful orchids, too! No one else can come close! We also thank the sponsors for the concerts. — Jeanne Jesse Welch Naples P.S. — Your new pool is gorgeous! If oil, what then? Editor, Daily News: It’s coming. Oil. There’s a Bill coming before the Commerce Select Committee in the next month which will introduce a penalty regime for people who illegally download material from the internet. A Look at the 2008 Socha-Gelbmann Survey
The results of the Sixth Annual Socha-Gelbmann Electronic Discovery Survey are in -- and the winners are … mixed. There is something for everyone to like, and hate, about where this market is headed. Consumers -- mainly the corporations that bear the greatest brunt of the electronic data discovery burden -- should be encouraged by the growth in information management services and software. This ups their chances of getting their electronic houses in order before the onset of litigation, investigations, regulatory actions and the like. Consumers also should take heart in the increasing emphasis on the analytical steps of ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Obama Admin: Cap And Trade Could Cost Families $1761 A Year ...
The Obama administration has privately concluded that a cap and trade law would cost American taxpayers up to $200 billion a year, the equivalent of hiking personal income taxes by about 15 percent. A previously unreleased analysis prepared by the U.S. Department of Treasury says the total in new taxes would be between $100 billion to $200 billion a year. At the upper end of the administration's estimate, the cost per American household would be an extra $1,761 a year. A second memorandum, which was prepared for Obama's transition team after the November election, says this about climate change policies: "Economic ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Video game aficionados might have to enter a credit card or find another way to verify their age before playing a networked game, thanks to a new push from advocacy groups who say they want to protect minors from in-game advertising messages. In-game marketing has become so advanced that it "allows advertisers to track game users" and detect if people who are exposed to certain ads eventually use or buy the advertised product, a coalition including the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, the Center for Digital Democracy, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and U.S. PIRG told federal regulators this week. Searching for Bodies and Justice on the Border
Guatemalan Sebastian Quinac organizes search parties to find the bodies of his fellow Maya Kaqchikel who die while walking in search of a better life in the Sonoran Desert. These search parties can put even the searchers lives at risk as they walk all day in temperatures reaching 115 to 120 degrees in southern Arizona along the US/Mexico border. During today's protest of SB 1070 in Tucson, Quinac described the sad effort of searching for the bodies of his fellow Guatemalan Maya in the intense heat of the desert. On Censored Blogtalk Radio, he describes searching for, and finding, a 28-year-old Guatemalan woman, a newly-wed, ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Small Business Blog - Labor Law Poster Update List
If you have employees, you are required to post various state and federal labor law notices (such as the minimum wage rate) where your employees can see them. The specific notices that are required and the wording on various notices change from time to time. Unfortunately, there's no one date in the year for such changes to be made. Each state agency and each federal government agency that requires a posting releases the required notices whenever they deem changes should be made. Since there are many agencies involved, businesses often find it difficult to know whether they have all the required notices posted. They also ...
