D.C. AG Peter Nickles has reached a settlement in one of the two remaining Pershing Park cases. The deal, which came together last night, includes a District payout of approximately $8.25 million to the roughly 400 plaintiffs in the Barham class action lawsuit. The deal mirrors the recent settlement in the historic Becker case in which demonstrators had alleged false arrest and mistreatment by D.C. Police. Like the Becker case, the plaintiffs in this Pershing Park case would receive about $18,000 each. The plaintiffs in the Pershing Park case had alleged that on Sept. 27, 2002, they were rounded up in the park, falsely arrested ...

reboot the republic » Seizing BP Assets: Compounding One Disaster ...
The April 20 explosion and subsequent round-the-clock oil spill from a BP-operated deepwater drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico 40 miles off the Louisiana coast has generated justifiable anger across the nation. It’s also generated calls for strict sanctions against BP, the most drastic of which is confiscation of all company assets. The front line of this campaign is an ad hoc organization calling itself “ Seize BP ,” which already has organized dozens of rallies across the country. Its mission mirrors its name: persuade the Obama administration to seize assets of the British-based oil company and use ... market research, surveys and trends
Too bad I don't live in America
THAT DAY IN September 2002, when D.C. police arrested hundreds of anti-globalization protesters in Pershing Park, continues to hang like a dark cloud over the city. The arrests, carried out even though demonstrators and bystanders had not been given an order to disperse, cost the city plenty. As part of a settlement, seven people caught in the roundup were paid a total of $425,000 by the city, Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey had to write a letter of apology to each plaintiff in a lawsuit against the city, and new police procedures -- induced by the D.C. Council -- were put in place. The cloud, however, has not lifted. Last week, ... market research, surveys and trends

The explosion and spill from a BP deepwater drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico has generated justifiable anger across the nation and especially in the affected coastal region. It's also generated popular backlash, one manifestation of which is an increasingly loud call for confiscating company assets. The front line of this campaign is an ad hoc group, "Seize BP," which organized anti-BP rallies in cities across America last week. The group's mission is as simple as its name: Persuade the Obama administration to seize assets of the British-based oil company and use the proceeds for compensating victims and ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

"In a civil justice system where you're five times more likely to prevail with representation than without it, access to justice requires access to quality legal services," said Assistant U.S. Attorney General Tony West in his commencement address at the University of California Hastings College of the Law on May 16. West's address was in large part a call to service for the graduates, who were reminded that a legal education "brings with it great responsibility: to reach out beyond the boundaries of our own comfort and security and to lead in ways both big and small."
